Hi I have a 55 plate nissan terrano 2 2.7 lwb.I have a problem with the rear diff on my terrano and it is that oil keep s being push out of the axle breather on the axle casing .The breather pipe runs from the axle up and in to the chassis of which oil keep running down chassis leg and dipping on to my hot exhaust and smell s very bad. I have drained and refilled the rear diff taking care not to over fill the casing .I can only get a litre of oil in the casing before it runs out the filler plug hole of which i left the oil to run back out untill it stopped so i dont think the diff is over full.I have used the corrected lsd gear oil.auto data states that the rear diff takes 2.4 litres but there is no way it will take that much oil . has any one else had this problem or if any one can help me with this problem i would be great full cheers rb

OK first all the T2s I have seen have a common breather pipe that links rear axle, transfer box, gear box and front diff, terminating in a inverted U in the engine bay off side near the brake servo, so your pipe must be disconnected/broken, and it may be possible the oil is not from your diff but an overfilled gearbox perhaps, anyway the first thing to do is reinstate the breather connection, Rick

If you have a 2005 vehicle you should have a C200 rear differential and not the earlier H233B (I am sure someone can confirm the types if I am wrong).

The H233B requires 2.8l of LSD oil but the C200 requires far less around 1.5l of LSD oil if my memory serves me right I cannot find a capacity in the manual.

Note: if you have a Terrano built after 2002 it is covered in the later manual.

ive just changed my diff oil, literally!! i could only get just over a litre in too, which is the sameish amount i drained out, the oil i drained out was frothy and coffee coloured so hopefully the reversing grumbles shall be a thing of the past?
mines an '03 plate manual g/box. mike.

Mine was the older diff and had 2.8 litres, that came out grey.
I guess the difference in colour is the limited slip diff friction material must be different between the two diffs.

The oil does get contaminated with little bits, that's why you have to change it.:thumb2

gawd blimey it stinks tho doesn't it :(
also, the casing was still warm 1hr after driving it. mike

I have just checked my owners manual, and both rear LSD axles are listed. My Terrano is a 2000 model, so I could possibly have either fitted then.

H233 2.8 Litres

C200 1.3 Litres

So, presumably, if you are draining about 1 Litre you have the C200 fitted.

Also... The front axle differential (which is model, R180) holds 1.3 Litres.

Do you think they started installing a LSD unit in the front differential, and fitting it at the rear?

Hi all, the thread starter last posted June last year, do not know how it got resurrected, Rick

Do you now I can't remember...

I was probably searching for something and came across this member with only a few posts, and without checking post date gave him a friendly welcome.

Yep so did I.

I now know the quantity of oil in the C200 is 1.3l which means I have enough in stock to do an oil change at the weekend as the LSD has started groaning and banging again.
