Hi i have an 03 3.0 terrano sport which when purchased did not have hand book.
Cnn anyone tell what type of oil the rear diff requires and would it need changing as the truck has only done 37,000 miles and would the gearbox and front diff require oil change .
Have been quoted £150 to change the lot .
But would prefer tio do them myself if they need doing .
Thanks Ady

yes it has the lsd or i presume it has is there an easy way to tell

jack up the rear end and turn a wheel forwards and see which way the other wheel turns, if you lsd it will turn the same way, if it has'nt it will turn the other way. :thumb2

The original handbook for my 02 3.0 SVE, although it makes no specific mention of the 3.0 variant...which is pretty much the same for the whole of the owners manual.

Hi all thanks for the info, very good site best £10 ive spent ,
Cheers Ady

Dont forget (as has been said on here before) check you can undo the filling nut before draining the oil out!!!! :thumbs :thumbs

I went to a motor factors today to get service parts and oils.

I know it's important to get the right oil for the rear diff. As above, the manual states GLI-5 approved for LSD at SAE 80W/90. The factors could find a listing for all of the other oils using my reg number on their system but not the rear diff, so they called Nissan who said that they sold the LSD oil but couldn't give the spec. Halfords had a similar lack of oil specified for the rear diff.

Is there a specific GLI-5 or 80W/90 which is approved, or an additive for a regular 80W/90 or will I have to go to Nissan on Monday?

Cheers,
Ian.

Hi i used 80/90 oil for lsd from motul cost about £18.00 from ebay delivered.
Also comma do a very good range of gear oil and their web site has loads of info ,it was recommended by several forum members on here

Ady is right...plug your reg and postcode at bottom left corner and it will even tell you where to go! LOL

Great advice as always - Thanks!

Might pop to Halfrauds for some LS80W-90 tomorrow as they seem to sell Comma oils.

I got some of the servicing done on the Teranno today -

Changed the diesel filter. That was pleasantly straight forward, especially compared to the ford transit. Didn't want to put the old diesel into the new filter and didn't have any fresh diesel to hand so spent ages priming (lesson learned for future!)

Then changed the engine oil and filter. What a complete pig the filter is to get at!!! I'm sure if Nissan had tried they could have made it less accessable, although I don't know how. Hitting the edge with a long flat head screw driver and hammer got it turning!

Then changed the gearbox oil. The manual said 3.6 litres so I bought 4L (Comma website says 3.5). The old oil came out a filthy black and there seemed to be much more than 3.6L. Sure enough, pumped the 4L of oil in and there still seems to be room for more. As with other gearbox oil changes I have done in the past I thought that you were supposed to fill until the oil came out of the filler hole. Am I missing something???

Seemed to run nicely on the 10 minute drive home though.

Cheers,
Ian.

...............As above.

I emptied the gearbox then put 4L of new oil in and was expecting the oil to run out of the filler hole when I got to 3.6L as the manual says that's the capacity.

It took all 4L and was nowhere near coming out of the filler hole (I stuck my finger in to check!). Should I buy more oil and fill until it runs out, or will 4L be enough?

Does seem to drive OK, even though there is a stink of gearbox oil in the car.

Cheers,
Ian.

Ah the old gearbox oil in the cab smell, mmmmmmmmmmmm, mine does that:lol
You'll probly find the top seal of the gear box is shagged:doh
You probly got all that new oil splashing about the gear lever now :augie
Dont put any more in.

Has anyones gearbox drain plug stuck in? apparently according to two different garages mine is proper stuck and they were worried it would break the case if they carried on trying. When I had a caravan on the back I used to get the hot sweet oil smell too...... yuck!!!! This is only a minor issue now compared to other problems.

The transfer box gaitor being knackered probably doesn't help the smell staying out as. Must get some black gaffer tape on it!!!

If you can I'd be tempted to take an air impact wrench to the stuck drain plug. It does take a 1/2" square drive after all, and the impact hammer action might help loosen it as opposed to wrenching it with a long bar which would be the last "I've bloody lost it and you're gonna get it now!" option! :lol

Cheers for the continued advice and moral support!

Ian.

Also worth trying to tighten it a bit first :augie
Sounds daft but it does work ........................ sometimes

i found that some times warming the out case can help as it makes the metal expaned so easyer to remove the nut!!! if not the hammer action always seems to work:D even if it dose f..k things up!!!! also you can get a good penertration spay to put round the bolt first and leave for a hour or too!!! my brother got some very good stuff off the net it was not cheap but it dose work:) have to get the name of it off him!! had a word with him its by wurth it freezes the the shit round the bolt some how making able to undo the nut!!! :)

Yeah, it's wierd but I agree that sometimes gently doing up the siezed nut/bolt a bit first (no more than 1/8 to 1/4 turn or you risk shearing/buggering it!) does work. Probably breaks the bond of whatever is stopping it undo.

Also agree with carefully applying heat. I recently wanted my tracking done to cure an off centre steering wheel and the garage could only undo the locking nuts after using oxy-acetylene and getting them glowing cherry red!

Might be worth cleaning off any crud around the drain plug then using an easing oil like Plus Gas. Works even better if left to penetrate over a few hours/days and works much better than WD40.

Good luck,
Ian.
