Hi guys, my motor was in the garage after the MOT for a brake pipe doing and the mechanic said he noticed whilst he had the rear drum off that there seemed to be a slight leak on the end of the axle that may end up contaminating the rear shoes with oil.
I contacted Nissan to order the seal that sits on the end of the axle behind the back plate and that the drive shaft passes through but they seemed quite confused.
So they emailed me a copy of the drawing and unfortunately the quality is so poor i cant make either the parts or the part numbers.
Can anyone shed any light on this please?
It would be great if someone could possibly tell me the code for the seal so i can locate one from a seal supplier rather than the dealers.

before you go ordering seals, get under and remove the rubber breather pipe and blow through it to make sure it is clear, it may even be broken off and blocked with mud, if the axle cannot breath then it will go through cycles of pressure and semi vacuum as it warms and cools the seals may not be able to cope with this given the age, but may cope well if breathable, next thing if you do need seals is you will need new bearings as well as they have to be removed and this is no easy task, special tools being needed, Rick

I stand corrected, just looked in the downloads and rear seals replacement is in there, and they are on the diff side of the bearing, so easy to do if you need to do it, the bearings must be greased, not having done one on a T2 I assumed a normal set up where the bearing is lubed by the diff oil in this case the seal is on the brake side of the bearing, Rick

I had a rear seal fail, it failed again very soon after the replacement.
The bearing had failed and taken out the seal on both occasions.
So first check for any play in the rear bearing.
This was a garage job, infact a Nissan dealer.

Hi, i had this problem earlier this year it turned out it was the seal where it attached to the diff that was the main problem so i had that one and the 1 near the drum replaced as they where £8 each sorry i don't know the part numbers as i had to get it done at a garage.

ian

ps how's it going you going up to club at any point

Hi ian, sorry a bit of a senior moment then I think...
No I havent been since the end of the shooting season, I take it you havent been for a while either then?
Hows your spaniel doing?

been going quite regular, seem to be making a bit of progress :thumb2 he's started coming back now now thank god just need to work on every thing else but we will get there ! eventually !

Just stick at it, it can be a long frustrating journey but its certainly worth it once it all starts to come together.
Yes mine all worked really hard the whole season, very happy and proud of them all.

Hi guys, finally got round to doing this job....
Decided i needed to sort my hand brake out, so started with purchasing a new handbrake cable, at least the two rear sections.
Took the drums off and as i was expecting (although not quite as bad as it was) the axle seal looks like it has been leaking and allowing axle oil into the nearside drum, making a right old mess, to remove the half shalf i had to remove the brake pipe out of the brake cylinder, which promptly ended up snapping off.
So i went onto milners web site and ordered the inner and outer rear axle seals, brake shoes and a new wheel cylinder (i usually just replace the wheel cylinders, saves problems with bleed nipples snapping or not sealing properly)
So just waiting for the parts to arrive, then i will give another update.

you do understand that you can only replace the diff oil seal, if you want to replace the grease seal as well it will mean removing the bearing, no easy task, Rick

Hi Rick, i ordered both cos i did plan on replacing both, but if the grease seal is gunna be a problem then i will just do the diff seal.

Thanks for the warning

If you are replacing the rear axle seals, check there is no play in the wheel bearings, as this could damage the new seals.

Hi guys, quick update.
Got my axle seal, shoes and brake cylinders. Decided to replace handbrake cable too, so purchased one from my local motor factor to find that it was too long and wouldnt fit, so had to return it, they tried another one of their suppliers to be told they only list the nearside one and not the offside....so ended up going to Andrew Pages who supplied them both for about £24.00 each.
Just out of interest I called my local stealer who quoted me about £60 per side and told me they would be on special order taking at least 7 days to arrive....at least Dick Turpin wore a mask....
Anyway all my parts are fitted and happy to say my handbrake works a treat now.
