Re-prgramming Key Fob

So, I have just renewed my subscription to this group but it does seem as though this section at least is very slow moving without many contributors.

I have lost/misplaced the 2nd set of keys for my Nissan Pathfinder, It has a simple 2 button Lock/Unlock remote fob and an ignition key. Repeated searches of the house have not found it. A replacement key programmed is expensive £100+. A search on line seemed to show that it was possible to reprogram the fob in the car, so I bought a fob with a blank off eBay. So far no complaints about that, but I cannot get the vehicle into the mode to reprogram it. Following steps 1and 2 of the instructions below, the hazard lights do not flash, (Or the interior lights as some other instructions say).

Anyone any suggestions please? As far as I can tell my vehicle does have some sort of communication with the key fob to enable starting. Using my original key and fob to open and start the car everything performs as it should and the car starts. I tried using the original (cut) key without its fob attached and the car would not start. Neither would the car start with the new (Presumably nn-programmed) fob attached to the (cut) key.

Step by Step How to Programming Instructions:

IMPORTANT: Before entering programming mode, have in possession all of the transmitters you will be using on the vehicle. Once you program the transmitter, all previous codes will be erased from the memory. The other transmitters will not be functional until you program the transmitters again.

1. Close and lock all doors with the driver’s side power lock/unlock switch.

2. Insert key into ignition and remove it from the ignition key cylinder at least six times within 10 seconds. Your Hazard Lamps will flash if you have performed this step successfully. NOTE: Withdraw key completely from ignition cylinder each time. If this procedure is performed too fast, system will not enter programming mode.

3. Insert key into the ignition cylinder and turn to the ACC position.

4. Within 5 seconds, push ANY button on the remote transmitter. Your Hazard Lamps should flash. NOTE: Do not press the button more than one time in the above step. If the button is pressed more than one time, the programming procedure will not be successful.

5. If there are any remaining transmitters (including the old ones), unlock then lock all doors using the driver’s side power lock/unlock switch and within 5 seconds, push ANY button on the next remote. Your Hazard Lamps should flash. Repeat this step for each transmitter (including any existing transmitters).
6. Turn the key to the OFF position, remove the keys from the ignition. Then unlock doors using the driver's side power lock/unlock and open the driver's side door.

Is it possible you have a worn ignition barrel and as such it is not recognising the blade being input into the shaft and as such it isn't going into programming mode?

Hello, thank you for the reply, sorry for the delay in replying. I don't think so, it is too late and cold for me to go and check that today. I think there is some form of life indicating that either the insertion or removal of the key has been sensed. Either interior lights coming on or off or something happening on the dashboard but I will check.

Have you re-programmed a key yourself?

At the moment I am trying with the old key as i have not had the blade cut. I did not want to pay full wack for a programmed key as I am convinced the other set is in the house or workshop somewhere.

Don't give up mate!!! Having read this again and doing a little research myself, that guide above is spot on. Having watched a few YouTube videos though I have spotted something!!!! All the videos I have watched have specifically stated to insert and remove the key "6" times however, one gent had to do it 9 times and another 7 before the hazards on their instrument clusters flashed.

The second thing to consider is frequency and whether there is actually anything in the new key fob that you have purchased!!! I know this sounds a bit crazy but when I converted some of my keys into flip style keys I naively thought that when I purchased the body online it would have the internals. Nada!!! I had to go away back to eBay and find the correct frequency Nissan Almera key the same vintage as my vehicle and in the 433MHz frequency (I think the earlier Terrano's are 416MHz? :nenau) Do you get a button click from the micro switches inside when you press the rubber buttons?

Hi, Yes I noticed that 10 times I think. I did purchase a key with transponder I ahve not actually opened the fob as so far that is not the problem. I was going to try today but went for a cycle instead as it was so nice.

Just reading the fob re programming sequence for the pathfinder and that says to insert your key into the ignition and turn to the ACC position then turn off and remove key then repaeat 6 times.
Could this be were you are going wrong as the instructions you posted just say remove key 6 times??
Worth a try.

Thanks I will give that a go as well. I am beginning to think I may have to pay for a pre-programmed key.
I did have a brief play again today but with the instructions and not successfully.

I know I am rather late to the party in this one but thought I would provide what little info I have to offer.

You appear to be running through the programming of the central locking correctly but forgetting that the coding of the transponder in the key is a separate entity. I suspect by now you have this sorted but for future ref the cheapest option I have found for chip and cloning is www.keymoon.uk. They charge £6 for the pcf7935 transponder and £6 to clone it, plus postage.

Of course to remove the need to clone another transponder you could remove the one you have from the working key and glue it on the key barrel near the sensor loop. It does not require power. Then any correctly cut key will work. However you should then inform your insurer that you do not have a functioning immobilizer ��

I am in the process of adding two spares so have been doing some research. However ever eager for a challenge and as having two keys done in total would be around £50 plus money for separate remote as mine is the 5wk4 782 type (which are 418MHz) I have challenged myself to DIY the job for less. Chips and cloning device are on the way from China as I type. Should have also got the blanks from China but grabbed a pair from eBay for half usual UK price.

Thank you for the information. You are not too late to the party. I have not done anything other than get the transponder and try programming it without success. I am still hoping the missing one will turn up! but am running out of hope.

When you say you have the transponder are you referring to a pcf7936 chip? If so you have to ensure it is formatted to id46 I before it can be copied to. Sorry I said pcf7935 before but that is for the earlier NATS seutup.

I have the blank key with circuit board. I am not at home to check numbers. I assume I bought the correct one according to the numbers on the key. On line it said they could be programmed in car but I could not get my 2007 pathfinder into what appeared to be the correct mode.

So, despite what it is said on the Web, you are saying it is not possible to reprogram the transpomder without equipment.
I just checked my emails and I had already been in contact with Key Moon who said the same.

I certainly could not get my vehicle into the "programing" mode but have not tried again recently.

Have you got anywhere with your programing yet?

So, as the original poster, a footnote to this thread.

I finaly decided that these keys were not going to turn up and called Keymoon today and arranged to go over tomorrow with the Pathfinder to have a key programmed their charges being by far the most reasonable at £35 or so including the blank, transponder, cutting the key and programming but you have to take the vehicle over for the programming, seemed very professional on the phone.

I have a blank with transponder so was going to take that altough I would not have blamed him if he said no, you have to buy one.

I was looking for the blank and transponder I bought some time ago in the belief gleaned off of the Internet that it was DIY job to re-program it. I have not so far found it although I am sure I will.

What I did find was the missing set of spare keys which had a sizeable collection of other keys on the same ring that would have cost a few quid to replace although fortunately I do have copies of all the significant ones. I have been looking for them for 6 months or more and have gone over the car thoroughly at least twice, I have phoned the Police in case they were handed in, phoned the garage I use in case they had been left there I have been through every jacket, pair of trousers, rucksack and tool bag at one time or another, I have walked the routes I may have dropped them on, I have looked in the nooks and crannies on our boat where they might have been put or fallen all to no avail. I nearly went back into the place I last worked at in October of last year.

I had even cleaned the car for the trip which is not something I do regularly as there is a large building site next door with a lot of dust blowing over.

Tonight I had a look in the safe for the blank key, actually got down on my hands and knees in the somewhat awkward cupboard with a torch and there they were at the back of the safe.
I have looked in there at least twice but obviously it was a man look.

I swear they had crossed to a different space time continuum and that it was only the impending likelihood of replacement that make them re-appear.

Alls well that ends well but bloody hell, I could have done with finding them some months ago.

Priceless I thnk we have all done something similar in the past.

My Missus often dispatches me to the freezer in the garage to fetch some item of food. I search high & low and return later empty handed. Various verbs/nouns are used against me as I go with her to the freezer - only to find the item immediately in front of me.
