Thanks FT I will bear it in mind, got lots of other things going on at the mo, might post some pics in another tread, Rick

Using an endoscope have been able to get the numbers for my pump, NP-VE 6/9F 2300 RNP 152, also downloaded an official Bosch service manual, from that I am able to now understand the AU "advance plate" it replaces the blank plate on the other side of the advance piston, not the spring side, the effect is it permanently advances the timing by about a 1/4 of its normal travel, also discovered that there is a pressure regulating valve whose piston is known to get sticky together with a mini filter in the return banjo, so over the next few days these will be getting some attention, Rick

Did the pressure regulating valve the other day and it has made a fair difference, wear as I had an intermittent hesitation just before 3k revs foot to the floor, now all is smooth, but will give it another couple of days to be sure before I start on the return pipe filter/valve whatever, Rick

Still waiting for someone with a 2.8 and the cam cover vac pump to show the oil jet, Rick

Still on the “to do list” Rick. With the weather we have had last week the Patrol is the only car that we could leave the house with. I am hoping to get it done this week. :thumb2

Thank you FT, I am just keen to try and find out why my motor went bad in the first place, compression wise it is now fine, but still have some pump issues, Rick

No worries Rick. I understand that you are keen and I would like to give you the results as soon as I can.

Unfortunately it takes a little bit longer than expected. I need to Patrol to tow the digger around and I need to do the work outside as my garage is filled to the brim. If the rain holds off this week then I will get it sorted for you.

I am just as interested to find out as you, as I may have a very similar problem.

Please bear with me.

Rick, doing the last job with the mini digger this week. For next week I hired a 30 tonner for a job which will last the whole week. As I don’t need the Patrol from tonight onwards I hope to get you the result in the next few days. It is showing as a 30% chance of rain tomorrow so hopefully it stays dry. Saturday looks like a wash out but if push comes to shove then Sunday looks fine. :thumbs

Rick, I removed the vacuum pump as requested. Unfortunately the engine doesn’t want to start with the vacuum pump and intercooler removed. The intercooler is blocking the oil jet otherwise. Not sure if there is a difference between your engine and mine as it is a newer model?

Looking at photo’s of the RD28T in the Y60 some of the components are in a different place. And of course the Y60 hasn’t got an intercooler. I have been trying everything to get it started without the intercooler and vacuum pump to no avail. Drained the battery so had to give up.

Forgot to take a photo of the oil jet when it runs on the starter motor. But it roughly goes as high as the flat area of the black towel and then about halfway across the flat section.

Did a bit of research and even though we have the same basic engine, the oil pumps have different part numbers for the Y60 and Y61. You would expect these to be the same. So I am not sure if the pump on the Y61 2.8td might be an uprated version.

Ideally you need somebody with a Y60 2.8td to compare with.

Thanks Colin, so it looks like my oil pressure is normal as I would expect once you got yours running the revs increase would make the oil jet hit the bonnet as mine does, still does not quite explain why mine is a comparative trickle until about 4 mins running, sorry you had no luck starting and flattened your battery but the resulting info is most valuable, Rick

You are welcome Rick. Bit disappointing that I couldn’t get you any information with the engine running.

What sort of oil do you use and when was it last changed? I was thinking if there is a small blockage somewhere that might restrict the oil flow when its cold. As it warms up and becomes thinner it might flow easier past the restriction. However I am not sure how much the oil heats up in 3 to 4 minutes running.

Cheers, Colin

Oil and filter just changed as rebuilt turbo fitted, but oil was no more than 6 months old anyway, and as you say after 4 mins running oil still felt cool, so bit of a mystery, but at least it does tell me that my cam follower issue was not due to excessive oil pressure, suffice to say I do not like and could never trust hydraulic ones again, how are you getting on with yours? have you tested the compressions yet? Rick

I haven’t done anything yet. Was hoping to hear that you were successful and that it runs a lot better.

Similar to Zac, I am also umming and ahing what to do. I need to do a compression test but I am reluctant to take the glow plugs out. If one breaks than the head needs to come off to be repaired.

I am weighing up the pro’s and con’s if it is worthwhile doing as it is very difficult to judge the cost of it all before you start looking into the issue. Don’t want to spend £1500 and still have issues.

In addition I can’t afford the truck to be off the road for too long as I need it to tow my digger. With my main job on hold till for possibly another 6 months+, the digger business is our main income.

Seriously contemplating buying a “new” pick-up for the business which then gives me all the time to sort out the Patrol. It is 10 years ago that he came apart so some issues (rust) are cropping up again but are in hard to reach places with the body on and no lift.

But it keeps going around in circles forever. If I knew that £1500-£2000 would sort the issues then I would go ahead with it. As it is cheaper then buying a new truck in these uncertain times. I need a crystal ball. :p:p

If you are reluctant to take the glow plugs out, and I can understand that re Banshee, then you can always do it in the injector holes, I can knock you up a test gauge no problem, when I put glow plugs in they are only tightened barely more than finger tight, and never had a problem, Rick

Thank you Rick, my compression tester has the adaptors for use in the injector posts. So hopefully this will not be an issue.

As long as I had the truck (12 years) I have never done any work to the engine apart from replacing the oil, coolant fluid and belts. Therefore I am assuming that the glow plugs will be in there good and tight.

Hydraulic Tappets

Most of my cars since 1976 have had hydraulic tappets - Opels, Vauxhalls, Mercs, BMW & now Jeeps. In those years I have done well over 600,000 mies in vehicles that were over 8 yrs old when purchased - never had an issue.

By comparison my experience with BL manual tappets was one of constant wear & replacements.
