Scenario - I'll be driving along in 2nd, change up to 3rd and if I'm not quite at the right road speed and start to accelerate, the car will struggle a little bit and my rear springs (right one more than left)

I know what most will say........ "Change gear correctly then" :doh

It's just annoying, I've tried twisting the springs into different positions but to no avail, what surprises me is on that the tops of the springs have rubber tops on but the bottoms sit metal on metal, this is where I believe the noise is resonating from, I wouldn't have been certain it was the springs unless I'd alredy had this problem on the Maverick as well as to the untrained ear it sounds transmission related.

My question here I suppose is, is there anything I can put between the springs and the cups so that it stops the rattle?

I'm away on holiday at the moment in West Bay sorry for my lack of presence on the forum, have to sneak the laptop on when the girlfriends not looking as she moans about me being on the forum when we are away.

:whip:

:p I would just live with it to be honest and/or change gear at the right speed ;) but I guess you good probably get some sections of thick rubber belting and cut to fit between the bottom of the springs and the mounts - see if that makes any difference?:nenau

Could you blather them in grease?

I used waxoyl on mine anyway, never heard a rattle, either before of after, just seemed the logical thing to do, on two metal parts touching together.

Are you sure it's not the UJs, or ARBs or panhard rod fixings?

I would have thought that under acceleration the rear springs would compress and shouldn't be able to rattle :nenau

Thanks for the replies guys

I know it's 100% the springs as I had it with the Maverick and I stuffed 2 rags between each spring and the noise didn't come back, it's exactly the same resonance.

For good measure though I did check tank guard, UJ's, Shocks etc etc all seem to be in good shape plus I managed to spin the spring slightly and it's now changed tone

I like rustics idea of Waxoyl however could I not just get 2 upper spring rubbers from my scrapper and put them underneath? After all they have been made for that purpose just the other side up :nenau

Just cut a square of cloth for under each spring, job done :thumb2

Good idea, but you will need something more substantial than that, maybe some reinforced conveyor belt material, or the side wall of a tractor or lorry tyre...:nenau

I've used motorcycle chain lube on quite a few "rattley" bits on mine (sprays on as a liquid, then the carrier/solvent evaporates away leaving a layer of grease). Good stuff and cheaper than spray grease.

Hard to accept that your rear springs can rattle at all, particularly under the circumstances you describe, they are under a reasonable amount of compression at all times (unless off road and one wheel goes into a hole) so my guess is that it is something quite different, when did you last do your rear diff oil as the clutches could be juddering, is one thought, Rick

My thoughts too Rick
Banshee, can you rattle them when the truck is just sitting level then :nenau
springs are normally under some compression as the vehicle weight sits on them.

Mine has that rubber bit at both ends of the springs, but as said, the presure they are under, I would be very surprised if they could rattle.

Personally, I would be looking at the brake pressure adjuster at the back o/s just above the axle, that can rattle. or the rear drop links.

If your's does then I'm going to do the same and see if this resolves the issue, I'm 100% sure it's this

Sorry to go against you guys but I wouldn't be so sure unless I hadn't fixed this before

I do notice that when I have nothing at all in the back the springs rattle under the circumstances above, however with a fully loaded car I don't hear a peep

If I clench my fist and hit it from the side it does make the same kind of noise yes

do not know what it is but is not your springs absolutely, Rick

I suppose the only way it could be the springs, is if the cups have rusted out and the spring are now free floating.

Or one has snapped. I had one break a couple of months ago and that rattled, couldn't see the break and it only rattled on acceleration. Found it eventually with a powerful torch, the top two turns had snapped off and wound themselves down but very difficult to see.

just noticed this, are you saying that you thump your spring side ways on and it makes the noise that you are trying to trace, if so I would be looking at the top spring mounts welded to the chassis, they do have a habit of rusting away, Rick

Just reading back through this and in your first post you say you have moved the springs into different positions.
The design of the top and bottom mounts only let's them sit in on position, also was this with weight on them or the chassis jacked up?
