Hi All

I bought my 54 plate Patrol from a Dealer ship in Norwich with 105 000 miles on and with a Full Service history and one previous owner. I was looking for the S model as I wanted something plain and simple with not much electrics to go wrong.

The previous owner had dogs or some kind of animals as the car stunk like a kennel on the inside however the seats were in a good condition. I was not worried about the smell to much as I cleaning my cars.

I took the vehicle for a test drive and all seems to be fine and in working order. It drove like something which had 105 000 miles on. So we completed the paperwork and started heading home. Filled it up at the nearest service station and just a couple miles down the road the engine management light came one. I thought that there might be water in the fuel system and the tank was empty and the car has been parked up for some time. Drained some Diesel off next to the road and continue the journey home with no issues.

Couple of days later I took the car to a friend of mine to give it go check and to replace the fuel filter while the car was it his garage. When I parked up at his place he pointed out that there was water leaking under the car which he confirmed later that it was the water pump.
He also came up with a whole list other things that was wrong with Patrol. As we al know how good a warranty is I managed to get the water pump replaced by the dealerships.

Anout three weeks ago I start noticing that the heater stopped blowing out hot air. I then saw that the coolant was low and the overflow tank was full but the main coolant tank was empty.

I took the vehicle to Nissan who pressure tested everything, flushed the whole system, checked for head gasket issues but could not find a fault. They recon that it could have been an air log.

To cut a long story short, the. Patrol is still loosing coolant. No water leaks, oil is clean, it don't over heat, no loss of power.
I have replaced the radiator and coolant tank caps and I am no in the process of replacing some of the water pipes that looks a bit worn.

What can this be?

Check your footwells for damp carpets, as the heater matrix might be leaking or the pipework for it.

Hi Thanks, sorry for the delayed response as I just came back from holiday in Sunny South Africa.

I have check the heater matrix and all is in order. The Patrol is still loosing coolant and do not know what to do any more about this problem.

how confidant are you about the head gasket? to check remove the top up tank cap and the rad cap (the one on top of the rad) and with the engine running hold the palm of your hand over the one on top of the rad, and get someone to repeatedly rev the engine, watch for bubbles into the top up tank, you will get a few to start with but should stop if they continue for say 5 mins then head gasket, you can double check this at a workshop with a sniffer that detects combustion gasses, Rick

do you have any smoke ? , if so what colour is it ? ..... agree with rick about the hg , good idea to use a torch when checking expansion tank .

If I had a £ for every time someone joined the forum and posted this I'd be a very rich man!!!

Hi All

I am pleased to can say that the problem has been sorted. It was the thermostat all along (not sure why Nissan did not pick this up the first time)

While the Patrol was with them I requested that they replace the oil in the gearbox, transfer box and the axles and now she is running on clean oils again and it might just be me but everything about the car just feel so much smoother. :D
