Power Steering Leak

I've been watching it for a while now & my power steering leak is getting worse :evil: It seems to be coming from the cooler pipe under the rad on the N/S fixing. I'm going to clean it up & talc it down to try & pin point it :roll: Is this a common problem ?
Would someone be so kind & tell me what type of fluid it is for the P/S ie ATF or Dextron II :?

hi sweety,

i used atf fluid when i renewed the fluid on my mistral a couple of weeks ago.

I found my hand book :roll: had a flick through it & found it The P/S fluid is DEXRON

dexron just a grade of atf i think kindve like the semi synth grade in engine oils!

Has anyone had to change the P/S cooler pipes before :?: Or dose anyone know the price of them as i'm going to have to replace them as the leak is getting worse :evil: I'm hoping the warranty will pick up the bill but as I have no luck apart from bad luck it may land on my head :roll:

Hi Sweety,

Just been catching up and found your post.

My return pipe was leaking, asked nissan dealer, got a quote of over £300, got a replacment from nissan1st (second hand set) using one of the many brakers web sites like parts gateway, paid £27, fitted them last weekend, easy job to do.

I am going to take a look at making a set at work based on my old set next week, just in case the replacment one start to fail (do not know what age of vehicle they came off)

If you've not sorted them and want help changeing them, let me know.

Wow £300 8O I did'nt think they would be that much 8O I'm still waiting for the garage to get back to me with a price for the job & if the waranty company is going to pick up the bill :roll:
The leak is coming from under the n/s mounting so if the waranty dose not cough up I may just sleave over the pipe where the leak is with some rubber p/s pipe to stop the leak as the rest of the pipe looks ok:roll:

Just an up date, the garage has got back to me at last :roll: Warranty company not going to pay up for new pipes as they have put it down as ware & tare as they've said it's a comon problem with terrano's & the alike :roll: Nissan have told the garage the pipes cost £270 8O 8O
So i'm going with my 1st idea of sleaving some P/S rubber pipe over the alloy pipes where the leak is to seal it up. Going to try & get it done in the next few days & let you's know if i've got to make a new mounting bracket to secure them back down after they have been sleaved ETC :roll: :roll:

I know this may be a stupid queastion :roll: But apart from P/S pipe is there an other type of pipe I could use like fuel line (rubber) or even coolent :? The reason i'm asking is after having a closer look the pipes on the N/S where the rubber pipe conects them together, the alloy pipes have a bulge to stop the rubber pipe form going on to far. So i'm going to need a pipe I can heat up by hot water to make it flex a bit more to get over the bulge
The other option i've come up with is trying one of them metal repair kit which are a bit like car bodge for fixing holes in fuel tank .

Any help would be most greatfull :smile:

I take it the hose that is leaking is on the low-pressure side, on this you should be looking to use a nylon or steel wire enforced pipe. Water hose is no good and will swell up with time, being in contact with oil.

The best option I think is go to a local hydraulic specialist, they always stock many sizes and types of hose and should be able to make you up what you need.

Hi Sweety,only a suggestion but some years ago I had to make up some pipes for a gearbox oil cooler for an automatic Volvo I had.I got some hydraulic hose that was suitable and fixed it with jubilee clips.I dont know whether you have sufficient length on the pipes to do that. The leak is coming from the metal P/S cooler pipe under the fixing point on the front panel under the rad. So I was hoping to slide a bit of pipe over where the leak is & hose clip it in place. the leak is quiet small at the moment & thourght this would stop the leak or try some of that alloy bodge stuff :?

Have you tried to put an advert on parts gateway (or brakeryard.com or 247spares) cause i got a couple of quotes dearest one was about £60.

As for what pipe to use can't say on that.

I am in the prosess of make myself a spare set at work, only problem is we do not do the flared end that goes into the steering box, what I did was cut the old one of after the bend and braze the old to the new using a small piece of steel pipe as a sleave, they are not exactly the same but will do when the second hand ones start to leak. Still have to coat them with something.

If you can wait a few weeks I can sort you out with a spare set but you would have to do the same as I for the steering box end. Can sort you out with some pictures over the weekend so you can see what I mean if you pm me your e-mail.

I have used with some success ,a product called Quiksteel.It is usually available from branches of Partco.It comes in a plastic tube and it looks like plastacine,If you break a piece off and mix it by squashing it in your fingers until it is a uniform grey colour you will feel it start to get warm.Make sure the metal is clean and dry before you start and then just put it on the offending place and form it in place like putty.It would be best to wear a pair of rubber gloves as it stick to skin as well. Worth a try. Steve

I may have ago at the metal bodge stuff 1st as getting a hose on around the bend of the pipe looks as it's going to be a real pain. I think if al else fails I'll just cut the pipe with a pipe cutter & put in 3" of hose for the time being & then make some extra brackets to keep the cooler in place.
I think for the long turm i'll have a look in the breakers for a small oil cooler for a gearbox & mount it behind the rad, but i'm a bit unsure if that would over cool the P/S fluid & cause other problems :?
