hey guys,

I need to change my power steering fluid, but I am unsure of the best method. Emptying the tank is easy, but how do I make sure the pump is empty and ready for fresh fluid?

Then, once re filled, how do I ensure the pump is full etc? I think I read that you start the engine, and turn the steering left and right and keep checking the levels...is that right?

Not sure if the system has a drain plug, or try breaking a lower joint, if not, just suck out the reservoir and refill .
To purge the system, your correct, just turn the wheel full lock to full lock a few times.

cheers Firebobby, I'll do that unless there is a drain plug!

Dunno if there's a drain plug but.
Under the front bash plate along the cross member there are the power steering cooling pipes.
Just undo the rubber at one end and take the cap off the resovior.
That will empty the system

ohhh super star, cheers mate I will do that!!:clap:bow

When I did mine I added 50ml of Molyslip, made the steering quite a bit lighter.

really? I might try that then, so long as it doesn't cause any harm!
Won't cause any harm, it's recommended by Molyslip. It comes in a 50ml bottle and is sold as Molyslip Power Steering Additive - I got it through eBay.

You can drain it out from the rubber hose on the P/S cooler pipes as mentioned. When you come to refill the system fill the bottle & start up the engine, top up bottle again then work the steering from lock to lock to get the air out of the system but keep checking the level:thumb2 This is how I refilled mine anyway on my last T2 after I cut the cooler pipes to repair the leak I had on them:augie

just thought...do I add the molyslip FIRST (before the fresh clutch fluid) or last? I just figured that I dont know if the fluid actually circulates or not?!

Clutch fluid:eek::eek: don't you mean power steering fluid:augie yes the P/S fluid circulates

I wasn't replacing my p/s fluid when I added the Molyslip, just trying to lighten the very heavy steering a tad, so I emptied the reservoir with a plastic syringe thingy, added the Molysip then topped up the reservoir to the right level. It mixes itself through.

Getting back to the original question posted by clivvy.Just suck the power steering fluid out, using a syringe. Refill slowly , then do the steering wheel turn full lock both ways a few time. Then top up fluid level as required.

just an update. I did this today, not a bad job. Emptied the filler using a turkey baster, then undid the pipe on the return pipes underneath and drained. Made a bit of a mistake by not connecting the pipes to the container when I started the engine to pump the remaining fluid out, but a quick wash sorted that out. Refilled as instructed, using 50Ml Molyslip and 500Ml exactly PSF.and initially there was a lot of noise which went away after about 10 mins of steering, driving etc.

All appears ok, bit smoother but I suppose I need to really go for a drive to get the fluid mixed and circulated!

another job done! :thumbs

Just keep an eye on the fluid level as there is a chance it might drop a little if there is any trapped air in the system but by the sounds of it you've prob got it all out:thumb2

alrighty, will do! I bought two 500Ml bottles, and have left the spare in the back seat just in case!

thanks for all the advice guys, very much appreciated.:bow
