Well I’m partially stranded at the moment, I’ve got RAC cover but I doubt even they would be able to get me home at the moment as the mini beast has dumped a load of snow here and even worse at home.
Last night I discovered the power steering pump groaning like made, Rick in true style has offered some great advice last night but rather than do anything last night in the blizzard I hit the bar and downed several drinks as you do in an emergency. I’m about 50 miles from home and no real problem if I ended up having to stay really as a last resort.
Plan of action last night was that one of the staff members lives close by and would call in at a garage to pick up some ps fluid but he’s got a bmw so he might not make it. Other option that Rick suggested was cut the ps belt but expect very heavy steering at low speed.
Question is does anyone know how many belts the 3 litre has and if the ps belt drives anything else?

There's only one serpentine belt on a zd30 but I'm afraid the pump is gear driven Jim

Have you found the leak Jim. I had a leak from the ps cooling pipe that runs across the front and loops back. Several guys including me have cut the pipe back as far as possible. There's a u shaped rubber bend you can reuse to join them back together.

To get you home can't you find some thing to substitute ps fluid. Just to stop the pump running dry. :nenau

If you're 50 miles from home, are there any members near by who could help?

Back home:thumbs

Got a lift into York this morning and got a bottle of Halfords ATF Power Steering Fluid. Filled reservoir up, started ran steering from lock to lock several times and topped up again. Went for a drive around base and the groaning had gone. Parked up on fresh snow got out and it had dropped a fair few drops on to the snow. Had lunch checked level drove to A1 and checked again all good and then drove home. It probably drops about a teaspoon full after it stops. Chances are it’s been dripping for a while but wife wouldn’t notice. Had a quick look and yes does seem like that pipe across the front but it’s still arctic outside so parked it up until next weekend.

Cheers for everyone’s advice.

it will be the cooler pipe that runs across the bottom of the front cross member.
They corrode under the clamp.
Had three now that have all gone in the same place.

Yeah that’s my thoughts too, is it easy to get to? Wondered about removing front bumper off?

We fixed Tdoug on the roadside when this happened to him :naughty

Granted, conditions were a lot better

Bash plate off and it pretty easy to get at.:thumb2

Just got home was going to chuck dog in the back and go for a small trip but sadly she’s made like a land rover and dumped loads out on to the floor. I flippin hate that truck:nenau

Well after a week stood not moving this afternoon after my standby finished I made a start. Decided to remove front bumper because the headlamp washers were leaking and also wanted to see how the tin worm was doing it’s thing. Bolts came out no problem at all which surprised me.
The bash plate had already been removed and not put back last year so one less job. It was plain to see it was leaking from the bracket at the left hand side near the rubber u bend. Surprisingly the two bolts that hold the brackets both came out without any drama too. Slackened the jubilee clips off on the u bend and then pulled the lower pipe out of the u bend. Have left it like that draining the fluid safely and look at it later. I fancy replacing the pipes with copper but not sure how they fasten at the other end, do they go into more rubber pipes or into the pump?

I will have to check but may have one of those steering pump cooler pipes, let you know tomorrow evening, Rick

I didn't worry about replacing the cooling pipes. Where they bend and start heading up, I cut them using a pipe cutter, as high as I could reach, flared the ends with a brake pipe kit and re-used the rubber bend.
Maybe easier than replacing them too. :thumb2

Well got up early before my late shift today. Cut the pipes off where they go vertical and fitted the rubber u pipe but don’t have a flaring tool like you Ian so just jubilee clipped on to straight pipes. Appears to be leak free for the moment
