Leisure battery is a start battery with a different label on it and usually cost more as a result, Rick

I'm not too worried about the 22ah as it's recharcheable through the ciggy lighter, and I'm not likely to use a high draw fridge off it, just recharging phone, tablet and running a couple of lights. My main concern was being able to use it for starting even though I've only had one flat battery in 30 odd years.
I think there is a difference between leisure and starter batteries, Rick, in the plate widths and cycle patterns as the starter battery is designed for short output with high amps and the leisure battery is a slow release. I could, of course, be wrong. EDIT: A quick look tells me that a 110ah Numax battery has a cca of 1000.
The third point is that of insurance as I've heard that some insurance companies will make an additional charge for fitted leisure batteries and camper conversions. I'll report back later on this one as it's likely to be a deiding factor at the moment.
Thanks for the replies.

If it's just for going camping a set of jump leads is all you need as most people would give you a jump start:thumbs I just make sure all the interior lights etc are switched off so there is no battery drain from them from opening the doors of the truck during the day. We got an electric hook up for our tent & it's been worth every penny as can charge our phones up, use a small electric kettle & run a cool box & heater off it

An electric hook up would be useful for those times when I hit official sites, but I'm looking to do some wild or stealth camping. Just rocking up somewhere out of the way for a night, getting my head down and then moving on, possibly with the odd bike ride thrown in. :)

A short story just got shorter. My insurance company has said that they won't entertain a leisure battery being installed.
Looks like the above for stealth camping and a hook up for longer stays.
Now I just need to get the window blinds sorted. :)

I brought the big beefy yellow version from maplins a few years back - has a 240v converter and two usb ports. WE just use the usb on holiday for charging phones.
I thought of getting one of those briefcase solar panels though, I know its sunny weather dependant but it would be ok for phone charging?

I had exactly the same, started the car without anyproblems, the only issue was the invertor died and thats what i bought it for

wrong you are, there is actually no such thing as a leisure battery, cut the things open as I have, start/leisure = the same, there are however a couple of gell batteries that could be classified as leisure but you will not be wanting to pay the price, leisure or fork truck batteries = 80% discharge on a daily basis with expected life of 15 years, start battery =10% discharge on a daily basis with expected life of 3 to 5 years, Rick

wtf fuduwudu!! I would not even bother telling them

Their stupid decisions are based in a computer running windows 3.1 god.. My toaster could make wiser decisions.

My insurance renewal was today.. A company which will remain nameless quoted me 900 quid annually... With no mods, the only mod they would accept is a dash cam.. And by having the dash cam declaired razed the claim by 9000 pounds....apparently because it could be stolen... Even though it unscrews... :doh

Idiots

I hear what you're saying Alex, but it all falls apart when they reject a claim... :(
Just had an email from Maplin saying that it's not suitable for starting a Terrano. Back to the drawing board.

terrano is i think 2.9kw starter so once turning it draws around 241amps but to get it to turn is a hell of a lot more.

Just about the only figure that I've been able to find on the 2.7 is 750 CCA and Maplin couldn't give me a CCA figure.
Bummer!

You might not be able to buy a portable starter unit powerfull enough. Might be better to have a sterdy box in the boot with a leasure battery in it. Or just buy your maplin gadget and use it for everything else except starting the terrano
