Hi guys finally got round to changing the oil on my t2 2.7 tdi and I replaced the oil with 5w 30 full synthetic as per m local euro car parts and Bosch oil filter and also replaced the air filer with a new one.

Also cleaned the inter cooler and maf at the Same time hitachi maf by the way

Also cLeaned the breather system of all the oil clogging it up

Put the car back together and the truck started no probs ticks over like a treat and souns a lot quieter but when I left it tick over for a bit I thought I'd rev it a little and to my shock I got massive plooms of blue smoke out the back like the turbo has gone bang !!!!

It only seems to do it when revved round to 3k rpm ??

What have I done wrong ??

The trucks oil hadn't been replaced since I bought it 3 years ago
Silly me I know.

Change the oil and burning oil all of a sudden wtf ??:(:(

Any help guys ??

I think it's the wrong oil mate.
You need some mineral 15/40 :thumbs
Then give it a right ragging, just to clean the old girls tubes out :naughty

Check plank out he did the same as u I.e 5w40 had same problem aswell when changed to what makeitfit said 15w40 mineral oil all was fine again:thumbs

.

I hope so just changed it to 15/40 mineral oil it still smokes like a golden but the oil filter would have been full of the 5/30 so it will have to burn off I pressure I'll take for a burn later and have my fingers crossed that the rozzers to pull up behind me !!! :thumb2

It report back tomorrow

Good luck. Enjoy the testing :lol If you get pulled the old bill, just say you've got the runs and need the bog ASAP.

to be honest when I made the same mistake I changed the filter as well, there is a fair amount of oil in there and it may affect the viscosity of the new oil whe they mix together.

.

I was thinking the same about the oil filter just wondering how I'm going to take the filter off quick enough and put the new one on before I drop a load of oil grrr!!

Plank Did your smoke issue clear once the new oil filter and oil was put in ? Or did It take a little while ?

I started the car so will the oil not have already mixed ?

yep oil consumption stopped immidiately and yep mixed already!

In my Td I have always used 10/40 Castrol GTX either mineral or semi- synthetic which ever is on special offer at Tesco or similar.

I never ever top up between oil changes, and the level on the dip stick never moves.

This oil change I put in a small amount of molyslip 2000E which helps to reduce friction, and get better lubrication protection... So they say, but when it's really cold, it does appear to turn over a little faster than it did.

Does anybody remember STP, that syrup, you put in the older cars like minis etc to try to improve compression and reduce oil consumption...?

.

Hi guys a quick update drained all the oil out again (the 15/40) I put in last night and replaced the oil filter again.
Filled it back up with 15/40 oil and some stop smoke stuff that's like syrup till warm and started the truck again engine sounds nice and quiet but it still smokes !!

I haven't taken it out yet coz I've got to sort out some ins for it grrr forgot about that till the wife reminded me !!

This sounds like an expensive problem to me ?

How on earth can changing the oil cause a problem like this ?
Admittedly even if I put the wrong oil in first time round.

I was optimistically thinking that maybe the oil will stop with a good run but surely ticking over for 15-20 mins would do the same ?

When I smelt the tailpipe I can really smell the oil burning

What could cause it to smoke like this so I can make arrangements keep or scrap?

Rings shot ?
Turbo gone ?
Gasket of some description ?

I'm stunned that from a simple oil change I have severe oil burning which is a complete contrast to the last three years of owning it and not doing an oil service and not even having to top it up because it's never used a jot of oil

Any suggestions guys ?:(:(

Is there any oil in the intercooler

.

There was oil in their intercooler till I cleaned it out but that was before the oil change and I put it all back together and there was no smoke whatsoever.

The smoke has only appeared since changing the oil change

Just been outside to rev it again and it puffs smoke on start up and when you floor it.

I did notice when I held my foot on the throttle it seemed to thin out a bit but then I released the throttle then blipped it again the smoke was dense again.

It also smokes very mildly on idle but is much worse when you floor it.

I just can't believe this I wish idbleft the shitty oil in there:(:(

.

Just took off the intercooler again and it's clogged with oil again I only cleaned it out Wednesday what does that mean ? ???

ShoulD it clog up that quick

OR is that the thiner oil bypassing something ?

So many questions I know lol

The turbo bearings if worn, will let engine oil into the air intake.
Remove the hose on the turbo, and you should be able to feel play in the bearings.

Check the oil breather on the top of the rocker box, it might be pushing some oil up there.

If the engine oil is over full, this can cause burning oil.

What it needs is a power run, to blow through all the traces of oil in the pipes.
Tick over with no load on the engine will not shift it all.

Good luck.

Sounds like turbo gone if there is more than a film of oil in the intercooler .does oil run out of it when you take the pipe off

.

Guys I took the intercooler off and like I say it was clogged up I cleaned it out with petrol and whilst it was off I started the truck and revved it and only the smallest amount of smoke came out ! but the turbo outlet has loads of oil on it where it joins the intercooler and the inlet manifold rubber pipe was also covered in oil !!!

The oil that came out of the intercooler was a joke there was loads !!!

I also took the pipe off that joins the maf and the turbo and the turbo bearing doesn't feel to bad about as much movement as you would expect from a truck with 114,000 miles on it but in no way does it seem excessive.

Could it just of been the thin oil found its way through the turbo seals where as the thicker stuff doesn't get through so easy ?

Also there was no oil it the front of the turbo as you would expect if the bearing were shagged ?

sounds to me like the turbo is gone

Have you isolated the oil blow by pipe yet? At least that will tell you if it's crank pressure or failed turbo.

.

What is the blow by pipe ?

Is it the pipe that comes off the top of the rocker cover then goes into a black cylinder type thing with 2 pipes off it 1to the sump the other to the turbo induction pipe ?

My next question was going to be what if I removed that black thing as I've blocked off the induction end so I get decent un corrupted air to the turbo

Can't I just put a pipe that joins the one on the rocker cover straight to the sump or is there something going on inside that black thingy ??
