I picked up the new to me 2.4 mav today and noticed a few little issues.

The first being the idle seems to be really low ?

Also the engine sounds a little bit tappety like the valves are dirty

The chain cannot be heard on startup at all and tick tick noise doesn't sound lick the chain slapping either

The car does look like its Ben serviced for a while I wonder if decent oil, filter etc would do it good

The idle seems really low like around 3-400 rpm

It idles there continuously it doesn't go up and down and will idle like that from the first turn of the key but it just feels like it's going to cut out

Where should i start with these issues ?

Also looks like the rocker gasket is leaking

And some twat has used a universal fuel cap in place of a proper oil filler cap:(

I grabbed one off a nissan Navara as a stop gap hope this won't leak any oil ?

Ages since I had a petrol one but I seem to remember them being an oil sensitive engine. So I'd be inclined to get the rocker cover gasket sorted 1st. While it's off do the tappets. Then flush the old oil out and refill with correct oil. Can't remember if they're hydraulic ones but that lot should sort your tapping.
Revs do seem low. Have you checked air filter, earth leads and coil packs ?
Rick's your man on petrols. Good luck :thumbs
RTFM :sly

tappets are hydraulic, they can go bad, but I have spares, rocker gaskets do leak, just replace it, also have a proper oil filler cap, these engines work on a constant crankcase depression, so a poor fitting cap can have effects in all sorts of ways, idling is one, Rick

.

Hi rick do you have a oil cap kicking around ?

Are the tappets a big job ?

What oil should I run ?

I was thinking of replacing all the vacuum hoses too can't hurt.

Air filter looks new aswell
