I would normally suggest the Diesel is better with deep water, but I will pass on that one.:nenau

56P round my area mate, check your local industrial estate for a gas supplier rather than at petrol filling stations.

I've had all three, diesel, petrol & gas. I found my petrol 4x4s much better to drive than diesels but at the cost of a few mpg. I find you dont have to drive them as hard as a diesel as they aint as lazy.
Only problems with gas is the initial layout for the conversion and the risk of buying one with a problematic conversion. If done properly though they are great and much cheaper to run than a diesel :thumbs

One thing for sure tho, if your towing a lot and aint going to get a gas conversion go for the diesel for the torque. I found my petrol Mav to be a bit gutless on motorway hills when towing 2 tonnes but the diesels around me didnt seem to bother about hills as much

Ah but LPG conversion is expensive to start with:eek:
Diesel will run oil as is :thumbs AND then stick some lpg up it for mucho power:naughty

not to mention 300-400k miles if you look after the diesel engine - i.e. get it serviced and do oil changes.

that i dont know about mine has had full service history and has only done 88000 miles befor i got it and the head gasket failed

Diesel! forget petrol, youll have belts to worry about, and the dreaded 100k mile issues the engine gets wher eyou have ot replace a major part, anyone? whats that part?? anyways, Diesel is better torque wise, Petrol is just smoother and quick but that sit, hardly worth it in a car like this, hence why diesel was more popular!

had both and i would go for the oil burner myself.
pro's and con's with both but i prefer the low end tourqe of the diesel especially off road as i found the petrol tended to run away a bit on steep downhill slopes.
my petrol was a thirsty beast but quicker off the mark.don't really worry that much about mpg just put fuel in it to make it go and fill it up when it needs some more:lol
neither are going to be that economical and 3 mpg difference dont even register unless you are doing alot of miles.
petrols tend to be a bit cheaper to buy also.
sold mine with 140,000 on the clock and it was still going strong.

Despite what a few naysayers preach, when these engines have problems its nearly always because of abuse of some kind or from some other problem thats been ignored and allowed to fester, like overheating.....the block itself is built like a brick sh1thouse and, as I get bored with saying, regularly does galactic mileages in the London (Fairway I think) black cab; indeed there is now a service that converts the 2.7 Nissan Diesel (for around £5k) to spark ignition to get round emissions regulations in London.

So as engine reliability goes, its up there with the best of them and let nobody kid you otherwise. Any motor is gonna fail if you don't take reasonable care of it. Head gaskets tend to go as a result of inadequate cooling.....just look at the poxy K-series!!

Its all down to personal preference!!!!!

But being honest and i'm sorry to say it on a Nissan forum, I think the petrol and diesel Mavs/terranos are as bad as one another!

If you want a Nissan 4x4 buy a patrol! :clap

what i am after is a motorway cruiser and a play toy

so somthing that can do 70 on the motorway sat at 2500rpm

is their anything in the mav/terrano range that can do this ???

Seems to me you need a motorway cruiser AND a play toy... lot less risk that way

have you seen the price of insurance lol

manchester cant get it down past £700 year and to have 2 that would just be damaging lol

Then i'd suggest thinking long and hard about your hobby and exactly what you are using the motor you depend upon for.
I'm lucky, my work is only half a mile up the road from my house so if my main motor breaks I dont have a problem.

I'd also recommend in future walking or prodding with a stick before driving...

Also - you will always break things no matter what the motor is when you are off-roading for a hobby. Especially the way you attack things in Briercliffe, the place is savage and before you know it you've snapped a pan-hard and blowwn a cv by wheel spinning then suddnly gripping on the sharp stone. The number of motors we've dragged down to the road with Paul's tractor you wouldnt believe...

It may also be an idea to build yourself a repair kitty if using a motor you depend upon for motorsport...
