Petrol ECU ?

Hi guys does anyone know if I should have an ECU somewhere on the Maverick? It's a '94 2.4 petrol. I'm having a bit of bother sorting it's poor running and mpg.
So I thought I'd ask the garage to help,even suggested I'd pay them to sort it!
BUT little man in the garage didnt know mavericks were done in petrol let alone where the ecu was. If there is one can it be used to diagnose problems?
Also what type of injection system is it?
Desperate to sort this before I put the gas on, TA

Definately an ECU present, and I would tihnk that it will be in the same location as the diesels, so thats either under the carpet passenger footwell, or it is behind the heater controls.

Bridge the OBD socket and see what codes you get flashed out on the MIL lamp first...

What are the exact symptoms?

TIM you're a star. I have power loss some of the time. It feels like the turbo has stopped( if it were a diesel),then its ok again . If I floor it then its not so bad but drop down to 3000 rpm again and bllrrb.
I've done petrol filter,plugs,leads,dizzy cap and rotor, basic timing could be a bit out but not intermittent!
I'll go and lift carpets now.
Is there a code list for the tests?

Yes there is a code list, i will try to remmeber to dig it out..

You dont mention you have MIL coming on? It sounds like it is dropping into limp mode for that amount of power loss, inwhich case the MIL should be on.

I would check the multiplugs to the throttle pot and the maf , as these are the primary load sensors on this engine, and a bad connection would cause the ecu to substitute a very moderate figure so you would loose alot of power but it would drive reasonably well.

What's a MIL?
I've just got in from giving it a good spannering, but still no joy.
I found the throttle body with all connectors, checked them all , and all seem sound and are clean.
Took the top off to check MAF it seems clean and the litle wire clean and sound. Couldnt find any pipes missing loose or broken.
I still cant find the ecu though.
The PDF manual says its under the seat!
All I can see there is what looks like a stereo power amp maybe.I looked by the fuses inside nothin there !
Could the ECU pixies 'ave had it away? :evil:

it could be behind the lower part of the dash under the heater control panel.thats where mine is.its a silver box with a large plug on the rear.


p.s the mil is the engine malfunction light.its a little engine shaped light that comes on when you start the motor then should go off after a few seconds.if it stays on then it means youve got a fault registering.

Ah ha, I saw a shiny metal box under the center consul when I wired up the CB! Wondered what was, thats one thing found anyway cheers.
MIL light,right bottom dash, yep, check. Thats not lighting up , except at start.
So could I be shaking the wrong tree? :?
