what are old style swb vitaras like for basic off roading in?
i used to have a grand vitara which was bad enough to drive on tarmac never mind off road so are these any better?

thanks

iv used 2 swb vitaras 1.6 8v
in standard form they need some work , i spent around 2500-3k on mine , live axle conversion twin lockers 33s and a 12000 lb winch vits i love em

i reckon "whatmots" yer man hes a link to suzi offroaders site in his signature at bottom posts or plank hes had a few suzis!

no the place to say it but i have two grand vitaras and in standard form they nock spots off a t2! more power more grip and a fantastic shift on the fly 4x4 system. however they are both a bit too new for real off roading. I think its people being scared to use them that is the thing as they do have very car like feel to them on the road.

suprisingly a grand vitara has 7.7 inches of ground clearance under the diffs!! in standard form, which is pretty good.

the old vitaras are ok and very capable off road but to be honest they are lousy on fuel! the v6 2000 cc is better on fuel than the 1600, but hader to get nod bits for as they ae quite different in many ways.

if you go for a 1600 16v beware of cracked heads!

The best bit i suppose is the availability of off the shelf parts for them you can do anyhting you want without spending a fortune. More parts available aftermarket than any other 4x4 around i would think including land rovers.

I had one and it was brill, cheap to repair and run, very bouncy!

you are all making me jealous!!! i just want an old wreck of a 4x4 of any make for off road use that i can gradually mod!!! the missus keeps reducing my budget though!!

Hi rag is there a reason why your looking for another motor to take off road instead of using your T2 :?:

i need my car every day so cant risk damaging it in anyway. the T2 is costing me enough to keep on the road these days!! Id rather just have an old 4x4 that i can trailer to any tracks and not have to worry about any damage caused!

im also a saddo and like a sparkling clean car every day!!!!

rag, if it were me it would be a suzuki, a 1.6 8 valve short wheel base, it ticks all the boxes!

Hi Rag I know where your coming from as ours is the family motor & the only 1 we have  so when we're out I have to be really carefull or my wife will string me up if I was to damage it

Why not just buy a small cheap runaround! i bought the wife a Hyundia Atoz, not the bonniest looking motor but it is cheap as hell to run!!
T2 comes out to play when i'm off!!

i like the T2 as my every day vehicle, thats why i bought it. its got everything i need for a day to day basis. I cant afford to keep another vehicle on the road with tax, mot, insurance etc so an offroader seems my best bet.

think your gonna need that on an off roader as green lanes stil publik highway and pay and play sites usually want tax mot dunno why though!

contacted a few pay and play sites up in scotland that are quite happy if you have no mot/tax etc. Most of their members drive on the sites without it at the moment.
Most pay and play sites are based on private land, therefore as long as you have the owners permission not only do you not need tax or mot etc but you dont even need a drivers licence!!!

ive still got my vit, i only brought my mav because the vit was terrible for long distances.

i brought mine for £400, got it through an mot (needed some welding) and took it offroad in standard form. there amazingly capable, and fun to drive. after the first time, i brought a cheap spacer lift from a guy called dave jones @ bits4vits and got some greenway tyres. while i was at it i had a heavy duty rear bumper made, changed the carb for an su, botched a snorkel on and fitted a leccy cooling fan.

now that i tow it with the mav, it doesnt matter whether i break it, and even if i do, parts are cheap and plentiful

btw, most pay and play sites ive been to and heard of, it doesnt matter wether youve got an mot or tax because most of them have disclaimers (you sign) and/or insurance if something does happen
