I know what you mean but the only thing is dude, you put tougher hubs on you are likely just going to move the point of breakage further into the axle. A hub breaking is annoying but really easy to replace compared to a CV or something else, especially on track :nenau

Or if you strip the head of one of the crappy little star bolts then it screwed either way lol [emoji28]

Always carry a drill when laning so if need be I could drill it out :thumbs

Won’t need to if I just wack the stronger ones on [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] and I like the colour
I need to whip these ones off and tighten my wheel bearing after I replaced it a few 100 mile ago now it’s seated in

Crack on then dude but just be wary of moving the axle weak point into areas that are more of a hassle to fix!

Ok guys. Big question and I’m expecting a few different answers.

So I have a dual battery system in the patrol starting battery under the bonnet and aux leisure battery 95ah that are connected with a split charger..
Now today I was toying with the idea of putting my 110ah leisure battery in the back of the rig on another split charge relay. But instead of running it off of the start battery I ran it off the 95ah leisure battery now I know it won’t start to accept charge until the first one reaches 13.4v or something like that whatever the split charger switches on at but my thoughts are I can run lower voltage accessories off of it phone chargers and led lights and the main leisure battery will solely run fridge. So what is everybody’s thoughts is it a good idea or should I just take them all out and buy 2 battery’s that are the same and just double my capacity now I am just working with what I have at the minute.

Also my solar will charge the main battery then once it’s full it will charge the rear battery

I think you will be pushing things too far... the problem is, split chargers tend not to fully charge the second battery, so I would not think that it's voltage would ever get high enough to even start to charge battery number 3.

There are 2 things you need to worry about, firstly voltage, lead acid batteries need a certain voltage to start to take a charge, this has to be higher than voltage the battery is currently at, and depending on exactly which battery type, needs to go up to around 13.8 to 14.4volts to fully charge.

Along with this voltage, you need the charging current. This is what actually tops the battery up. I do not know what alternator the Patrol has, but on the Terrano, it's alternator is just not powerful enough to cope with 2 big batteries, let alone 3.

Using arbitrary figures, if the alternator outputs 100amp, it first needs to charge the primary battery to about 80%, before it can start to charge Battery 2, this again need to get to about 80% before it starts to charge battery 3.

Physically, the cars normal running electrics use about half the alternators power, turning on things like fans, lights, and windscreen wipers can take it right up to the entire alternator output, leaving nothing to charge the battery. This is why people tend to get more flat batteries in the winter, as the car does not get a chance to replenish the battery.

But if you take the extra 50% output from the alternator, that is 50amp. The primary battery needs to replace what the glow plugs and starter took out, which can take the first 30mins of a journey. The second battery, will depend on how low it was, but in worst case scenario of it being nearly fully used, it will then take 2hours+ to charge that. The same for the third, so you would need to drive for at least 5 hours to actually charge the third, assuming you never use any headlights, wipers, or fans.

You comment about using lower voltage things on the third, I assume you actually meant lower current things, as every thing will need to be 12v rated, regardless of which battery.

Yeah just little things charging phones and led lights inside the roof top tent etc also I plug my car in at home to a leisure battery charger so they always get fully topped up. And almost all of our trips away end up being a good 3h drive to Scotland.

I do really appreciate the input it helps me decide what’s a better option for me.

Just wish I had a spare grand to spend on a lithium battery [emoji29]

I would love a couple of Lithium batteries for the caravan, but still way too expensive... I read somewhere that they are now starting to sell the 2year old ones taken from battery backups, which are changed for preventative maintenance, and most are still 95% of original spec, but often less than half price... Not found where to but them though.

I fitted a Mains plug to the back of my T2, and had 2 smart battery chargers built in, so like you I just plugged it in, and fully charged both batteries while parked up at home. Doing it that way would work, but to be honest, if doing that way, you might as well save the time and money wiring the 3rd battery in permanently, and just take it as a stand alone, put in when needed battery, charging it before you go.

Now I have the Jeep, I have a 40 amp DC to DC charger, and that is definitely the way to go, but again expensive.

Yeah prob easier that way I’m just struggling for power at the min as I don’t have a proper fridge just a cool box that just zaps the battery straight away.

Have you used the roof tent yet??
I'm in two minds about one.
Prefer the hardshell ones but jesus are they pricey:eek:

No I haven’t used it but I’ve chilled out in it on an afternoon and left it in the garden for 6weeks open in all weather and not a drop of water inside I went in it when it was really windy too and it was super stable

Can’t remember if I put this up but it’s all boarded out ready for black carpet. Just need my mate to go back to work so I can get some.

Anyone point me in the right direction to mounting a winch in my standard front bumper as I can’t afford a winch bumper yet???

Standard bumper isn't strong enough or designed to house a winch.
A winch tray and modifying the standard bumper to fit around it could be an option.

Yeah sorry that’s what I was thinking forgot to say I have seen a winch tray for £350 online for a patrol but was hoping not to spend that much as I’m trying to save for a proper bumper
