Oil Leaks Found!!!!!

So while I was under the car the other day I tried out my new torch and decided I wanted to try and address my oil leaks that I seem to be collecting

I think I've found the sources of them and there are 2

The first one appeared to be higher up the engine which was "spitting" oil, it looks as if this is the pipe on the back of the turbo which either has a hole in it or isn't quite tight enough as the pipe looks a bit skewed, might just need pushing back on and the jubilee tightening

The 2nd one appears to be coming from the Oil Pan, right at the front of the pan and drips down, It looks like a very small leak but one that has been there for a while looking at how much oil has accumulated under there, reading the workshop manual it just appears to be attached to the engine with 20 small nuts and when refitted uses a "liquid" gasket

I have already removed the sump guard to make repairs easier as it was blocking EVERTHING!!!!! My question is, with that out of the way, can it be removed with the engine in situe to be replaced or even enough gap just to be dropped down enough to add new liquid gasket to stop the leak at the front

Obviously I would only attempt this come the next full oil change that was due

Answers on a postcard as most member now appear to be on the ferry to France :p

I remember a tech at honda using liquid gasket, he had a nightmare of a time trying to seal. 4 attempts as he couldn't get it flush.
 
Yes sump can removed with engine in, but to do it reliably you need to drop the front diff, without doing this the sump will only drop a couple of inches and it will be very difficult to clean off the old sealer and apply new bearing in mind oil will be dripping down for a long time, so difficult to keep it all clean, Rick

Hmmm, so if banshee is not dropping the diff perhaps he could drop the sump and let the oil drain overnight? Hopefully dry as a bone come morning? :nenau

yes could be done but still very difficult, applying mastic by feel not sight is not easy, and it is not just oil that comes down but other engine debris, Rick
 
A pain to remove even with the front diff out the way as the rear bolts are very close to the gearbox bell housing.
Only ever done one and that was enough.
 
Are you sure that the sump is the culprit. Don't rule out the leak off pipes, they can weep and be misleading. Mines doing the same and remember Clivvy posting a few weeks ago too.
 
The sumps also rot and oil starts to seep through.

Yeah true, the techs at my work were horrified when they first looked underneath :lol

Yes, but aren't the techs trained to be horrified, and give a sharp intake of breath... :eek: every time they look at anything, :nenau

I just thought this was a prerequisite before they give a quote for any work, and maybe they can't get out of the habit, even for a colleague... :confused:

Very true Rustic, I went to mechanics college in the early 80's and the 1st week was spent practicing the sharp intake breath. ;)

Hahah no they are actually fair mechanics would you believe, on often occasion they will turn work away or not do a request if it is not needed (when u get a customer asking for specific work ect)

They were horrified becuase of all the "engine oil" down my block, then realised it was infact leak off spillage :lol

Let's just say it wasn't a few drops... :augie
