I decided to take the car to the local garage just recently to have the oil and oil filter changed.

The filter has definetely changed as I can see a new canister in place (changed colour) but i thought I would see honey coloured oil from the dipstick. It still seems to be very dirty oil though. Is this a valid check?

oil will go black almost straight away if theyve gone to trouble changing filter theyve changed the oil!

totally agree with Jace, I've had diesels for a number years and this really surpised me when I first saw it. did they manage to spill oil on the chassis leg below the oil filter, if they did it drips on your drive.

Thanks for the information guys.

I'll check for the oil drips ...

Did my own engine oil change a few weeks ago. Expected to see lovely expensive golden oil which went in show up on dipstick but after a few minutes running it was l like I had never done a change. It did "Drizzle" off the dipstick looking a bit oilier though and engine sounded better.

Yes - I did think the engine sounded like it was purring quite nicely. I wasn't sure whether it was just my imagination though. I was surprised to see the oil so black but my mind is easier now you guys have reassured me.

I agree with everybody else.. quite a shock to see the oil after a few minutes.
I will be doing an oil change in the next few hours, I normally buy Castrol GTD 10-40 but this is no longer made so I have bought Castrol GTX Diesel.
A quick call to their help desk confirmed that this now replaces the GTD and as with modern oils they are better than the older types.
In fact he said that you needn't buy oil for diesels now, most are ok with both petrol and diesel.... not so sure myself on that..

What does every one else use in theirs ?

yea i worked in motor factors for a while one rep told us we could give out petrol oil for diesel engines and vice versa if we were short on 1 kind... BECAUSE.....

THEY WERE SAME OIL JUST PACKAGED DIFFERENT!!!!!

cos normal joe blogs would pick up an oil read it and go ohh that does diesel and petrol oh that wont be as good as one specificaly for my motor. i want 1 made for the job

never mind the type how about the amount went to my local supplier the other day for service parts nearly took the mick when he put 2 cans on the counter 8O these things nearly hold as much oil as the amaco cadiz
