right guys, i found the problem and fixed it. I couldnt believe it. I revied all posts this afternoon, then had a quick word with a mat eof mine, non mechanic type who said he had a problem like that years ago on his renault 19, was loose wheel nuts. Anyway, that reminded me that i noticed i was short of one wheel nut on the front passenger wheel, so I decided best check the nuts for a giggle (thinking they woudl be fine due to the previous owner recently doing the front brake pads-ex mechanic). To my disbelief the majority of the front wheel nuts on both wheels were loose, and i mean hand loose!
I went to Halfrauds straightaway, as I wanted this problem fixed and paid way over the odds for some new locking wheel nuts (went in my MAzda, not the mAv!) and got to work. I removed both front wheels and checked everything, mostly all ok, one bolt thingy was slightly de threaded at teh end, but i was able to put one of the odd wheel nuts back on ok and tighten, the other side was fine, so bolted up and tightened. I then checked the rears, only two botls loose, one each side. I was able to re tighten with new nuts, except one was very difficult as slightly de threaded, i used one of the original shorter wheel nuts and that went on fine. Took for a spin down the road, did a few tight turns, then went round the back rough track, gave it some stick, tried 4x4 mode and returned home, i had to reverese as the car got stuck, to disengage 4x4...i thought that was odd as i had only gone abotu 50 meters on the road in 4x4....anyway, no knocking noises!

Ok so I am a bit of a fickle character, and I worry now that the wheel hubs might want replacing so that i have all nice wheel bolts, what do you guys think? I mean, i was abel to tighten every bolt up fine, i just worry that some may be de threaded a but now. i am thinkning that if the hubs are cheap ish, and simple enough to replace, i will do it. If its dead expensive, and you guys think it will be ok (after getting garage to tighten properly) then i will leave it.

just tighten them and check they stay tight for the next couple of days....
dont bother with garage tightening then

they will just play with your mind and get you to change the hubs

just monitor them for a few days make sure they stay tight

ok will do BUT i am unsure if i am tightening them enough. I am not a very strong man, so as I have tightened the nuts, and i have done it so that its tight plus a bit, will that be enough? I can loosen them again myself with a bit of a tug... i do have a torque wrench but i dont know if thats suitable....its just a halford thing i used for engine nuts..

oh...and what if they DONTstay tight over the next few days, whats that a sign of? I checked the threads on the hubs, and they did seem fine (except the two slightly damaged ones)

just as tight as you can will do.... even girls can change a wheel so you will be fine.

they more than likely will stay tight ... checking will just put your mind at ease. when your driving....

Vehicle wheel braces are designed so that an average person can apply the correct torque to the wheel nut/bolt without going mad. That said if you have a torque guage use it to be sure.

Wheel nut torque
118 - 147N×m
12.0 - 15.0kg-m
87.0 -108.4ft-lb

Its inportant to make sure you settle the wheels onto the studs properly. Tightening them with the weight on will nt acheive this. But as you have been inspecting the threads I guess you have ad the wheels off.

I bought an extending wheel brace from a motor shop, it has a 1/2" square drive on the end so I had to buy a 21mm socket to go with it. An extendable one will give you the extra leverage to ensure it's tight enough. The way I was tought is to refit the wheel and had tighten the nuts. Once all the nuts are fitted nip up opposite sides (as near as you can with ours). Then lower the jack and give a final nip up.

Just found this on Ebay which has the 21mm fitting.

Thanks guys, feeling a bit more confident now, very relieved actually that the knocking noise isnt anything serious!

seroius....

youve never had a wheel come off before then!!

nope not yet, and i certainly dont want one coming off either!

But it shows it pays to check the obvious things first....and never trust tyre depots....

As people have said, doesn't need to be any tighter than you get by hand with the standard handle...nice when you get a problem sorted though isn't it!

Means you can move on to the next one! :(

aye, certainly is nice to fix things yourself, and in my experience there is always another problem or niggle around the corner! I had similar issues with my Mazda mX6 last year, got them all fixed myself, then the other more tricky stuff sorted at garage, not shes brill, and reliable, beautiful car. Getting in the mazda after driving the Mav is weird!!
