hi guys. well, first week with the mav, literally today is the seventh day! Anyway, we decided to shift a load of old bricks today and other rubble to the recycle site. Last trip, as we neared the site a knocking noise started. Goes in time with velocity, so as we slow down, it gets slower and so on. It does it in a straight line lightly, more to the left, less to the right, much quieter at speed. I am no mechanic, butu I am thinking CB boot/joint? Any ideas guys? Anything I can check or fix myself? If I can verify what it is, I can at least order the parts for my mechanic...

hoep yo can help!

might sound daft but is there anything jammed in a tyre? :nenau

could be cv joint, is it worse at slow speeds turning sharply,

ssteve

ok, best description. low sounding dull knock, almost as if something was stuck on the tyre. Sounds like its on the left to me, seems to make a noise in time with the wheel sturning...when i steer, i think it goes quieter when i steer to the right, slightly louder to the left...

oh, had a look underneath-cv boot in good nick, no leaks to be seen. although dirty, everything looks in place, no leaks to be seen...

you have checked your wheel nuts, haven't you?

ssteve

Shouldn't be a CV joint as they shouldn't be turning when on the road as you shouldn't be in 4x4. However if FWH aren't working properly then it could be.

Try jacking up each front wheel in turn and see if they turn freely without turning the driveshaft. That wil at least eliminate FWH jammed on and any CV problems.

If not tied into the above my best guess would be a badly worn bush somewhere causing things to flap around or a worn rear propshaft UJ.

ok, will try these suggestions tomorrow. Wheel nuts look ok also, but will double check again tomorrow...if i cant find the problem, its going in hopefully next week for rear brake shoes-will get it looked at then...!

If you don't know much of it's history how about changing rear diff oil but ensure you use correct sort as it's a LSD (limited slip diff). I'd be thinking about it anyway just as a service item.

Clivvy just check the bushes at the ends of your front anti-roll bar - they can clonk about if they are bolloxd.....bushes connect to end of ARB and go through front wishbone with a rubber top and bottom....if you can see the spindle of the bolt then the rubbers are knackered....replacing them is easy, although you probably need a disc cutter to grind the bolts out of the ARB as they rust in very easily....you will need to remove the skid tray (4-5 bolts only) to get full visibility....

hmm...i will take another look, but i think i did see the spindle through, but i need to re check, thanks thats good advice, i hope its something as simple as that as I am skint right now!

but the thing is, the knocking sound is constant, in time with wheels turning, as opposed to random knocking you get from bad shocks or bad anti roll bar links.......it had been fine until yesterday when we used it to take a load of rubble and bricks to skip. i had to reverse down my drive to the back, which has a slight slope, it was fine for two trips, and on the third trip, all of a sudden, thud thud thud, was quite loud and people can hear it....??

in fact, i almost thought it was a flat tyre (thats what it sounded like), but the tyres are still up....!??

Ask your self a few questions.

Did you attempt to use 4wd?

Did you travel over any kind of rough ground collecting or dropping your load?

Is the sound still there when you dip the clutch whilst moving?

How about changing your RH wheel for your spare and then taking her out for a test drive and then try the LH and do the same.

Get out there and brave the showers, not too bad here in Mirfield.

Thanks Jim, just been out and about in my Mazda, so having a brew now, then its Maverick time. I am going to mess with the 4x4, i wondered if perhaps the auto hubs are locked or something? I havent used 4x4 mode at all yet, but perhaps i knocked it and didnt notice. As for rough ground, not really, just the slop down to my drive and the extra load in the back....

could be one locked and one free,

but not sure if that would make the sounds your talking about..

As said previously try jacking front end up and turn by hand the front wheels and see if it turns the front drive shafts.

When my front hubs stuck it sound like a plastic spoon clicking in the spokes of a childs bike or something, sorry but it's the best description I can think of. It def was not that loud though, more noticable with the window down going past a solid object like a wall.

Weathers looking a bit more miserable now but still dry so good luck investigating it.

same thing happening to mine, going to garage on wednesday, the place i use imported alot of terrano's back in the late nineties he says they had quite a few problems with the four wheel hub getting stuck on,he seems to think that,s what's wrong with mine, luckily it's still under warranty:) just a quick question, if it is stuck on what damage can be done if you continue to drive it and is it stuck on all the time?

If one hub gets stuck on the other will keep trying to engage but the hub and the shaft are turning in the opposite direction and you get the noise Jim descibes above, a kind of ratcheting noise. The solution is to briefly engage 4x4 then go straight back to 2wd every time you get the noise. This will engage both hubs and leave the front diff turning so you may get slightly less mpg but at least you won't be doing any harm to the good fwh.

Forgot to say once my hub stuck possibly part engaged and over heated with smoke pouring off it. Might be worth checking if your hubs are getting hot. Have a search there are loads of threads regarding the front hubs.
