I had a night out fishing last night at a lake close to where I live, Had a few bites but didnt catch any fishies

This morning I decided to make a cuppa and put the kettle on, on the portable gas stove. Its one of the type you put a aerosol gas cannister in. so I lit the stove but the flames were a bit low so I took the cannister out, gave it a good shake and put it back in the stove. lit it and put the kettle on. I was using the gas stove in the boot of my terrano as I have hundreds of times before.

Suddenly the flames went a bit weird and shot up all around the outside of the kettle, the boot was empty and I laughed a bit at the flames but then to my horror a big flame shot straight across to the gas cannister then the cannister was on fire . so I picked the whole lot up out of the car and chucked it away from the car, when it hit the floor the cannister exploded

saved my car from a fire death, I doubt i will be cooking in my car again............or at least until next time :doh

I've heard about these stoves doing this kind of thing before. I've seen a lot of people using stoves in the back of the cars too, a friend of mine used it on a plastic table and it melted it's way through the table.
I've got one of those stoves too but I treat it with care.

Probably the cool air, butane will not work at low temps near to 0c, I have noticed that my blow-lamps will sort of cough and send out a long yellow flame until they have warmed up, this only happens in very cold situations. regards bri

Propane is heavier than air, any leaks sink to the bottom of a confined space (such as a boat or cellar). When enough has collected and an ignition source is introduced there is a very loud bang and lots of destruction.

What you really need is a candle so all the waste gas is burned off as it arrives :sly

jeez glad i read this after i have just cooked steak and onions on ours due to gas place giving me wrong refill bottle of propane that we run our range cooker on:doh
cant swop it till monday so looks like pub lunch tomorrow:clap any excuse

yep I reckon it was a dodgy valve on the cannister. I put a new cannister on and made my cuppa using that. but the cooker was used outside the car this time :thumb2

one scary thing is the amount of times I have used the cooker while laying in my bed in my car

Re Propane burns cooler, We'll probably go back to Butane for that reason in the spring. We have 2 bottles of each, only 2 on the boat at a time, only need to change the regulator.

Both Propane and butane are heavier than air, and in deed the gas bottles are stored in a locker with a hole in the bottom, to let any gas out, but the locker is above the water line.:thumbs

Gas on a boat in the middle of a lake or broad, or in a canal tunnel, you can't just nip out of the door and walk across the field, so this is the main reason that Boats are inspected with a Boat safety certificate every 4 years like an MOT but dearer.
As well as gas leakage, there is also flow rates when all appliances are on, fixed ventilation, wiring, fuses, inspections of pipework, cables, fire extinguishers, escape route other than the cabin door,
The biggest risk after gas is petrol and again the lockers have to vent over board. There is also a risk with batteries, and they have to be secured and have the vent pipe venting as well.
Most inspectors like to see if the butane can boil a kettle and make a cup of tea, :lol
The biggest cause of casualties on a boat is some idiot refuelling petrol in a lock, and the fumes find their way to the pilot light on the water heater....

So as we'd run out of gas we had a bbq
As we weren't properly pissed yet we thought safe and put the bbq (tescos type tin foil box) on the deck:thumbs
Drank more beer eat stupid fish and drink more beer
A little later while trying to warm some nasty cheap tesco whisky we were told by a passing sailor that our boat was on fire
Pht, nah not us mate says I, closely followed by a nose full of burning fibreglass:wasntme
Once passing sailor out the way we bundled the still bloody hot bbq and gel coat into the see with boat hook and fish slice:doh
So just goes to show, dont drink and sail, or is that dont drink gas, no no its er erm
