not starting

hi everyone

my mate at work has the use of a maverick 2.7tdi lwb 1998
it has been starting fine untill the battery went flat .he has removed the battery to charge it up, refitted the battery , now it only cranks and will not fire up , any ideas

quite possible that a aftermarket immobiliser is fitted that interupts the fuel pump

maverick is fully standard ,it has been in my mates family from new

depends how long he had the battery off and by the sound of it the truck doesn't get a huge amount of use?....has he primed the fuel pump?

BUT, the glowplugs take a LARGE amount of current relative to the starter motor so if his battery is bolloxd they won't get a chance to warm up - its worth leaving it for another 5-10 seconds after the glowplug light goes out before turning it to the Start position and see if that helps.....

If it does, then he needs a new battery I'd say....see if you can find out how long he's had it?

the maverick is usually parked up in a garage for a couple of months at a time and then gets used for a couple of months and then back in the garage again, always starts without jumping , my mate has been using over the last couple of week in the bad weather dailey ,parked it up for a couple of days outside this is when it failed, battery is about 4 years old

well four years isn't THAT long but with a cycle of use like that the battery won't have been in great condition. and I bet that "about 4 years" turns out to be 5 or 6 typically, time flies!

Worth trying another one.

could, when battery was removed, it have been possible that wire to glow plug relay was broken, mine was when i bought car, would not start, glow light cam on, but no feed to plugs, just a thought, as the relay and wires are just at the side of the battery.

my mate just been intouch , he has now got the maverick going now:clap , the multi plug on the cold start relay was corroded , he thinks he may have knocked it when removing the battery , now cleaned up and starting ok,

i think this must be common then, acid spill from battery? would make sense where it is.

right next to the battery in a cut out in inner wing!!!!

is there meant to be a cover? mine was open to ellements, but yes, right next to battery.
corrosion looked acid based, very green, yes i know copper
but had the look of battery terminal about it.
and was, on mine, knocked by previouse owner when changing battery.

its not ideally placed, a simple flap cover would probably save a lot of grief.
