me and mr makeitfit went to check some lanes for the local glass rep the other day, it also gave me a chance to try out the new manual hubs, anyway after one of the lanes i dropped it out of 4x4 but the light didn't go off and i got the old windup, in the end i had to reverse to get the light to go out and for the 4x4 to disengage, does anybody have any ideas why it would do this?

Used to do this with my old frontera as standard procedure.

What hubs you running? :nenau

Think it happened to me with my manual hubs, like you just reversed a few feet and the light went out.

So are they incorrectly set up? Or are these characteristics of manual hubs then? :nenau

Had it happen on my old T2 IIRC rammed it back into 4WD then hard back into 2WD & the light went out but had auto hubs so always backed up a couple of feet to release the hubs

see this is the point of the manuals so i dont have to reverse to disengage the hubs, i'd imagine people with fixed hubs dont have to reverse which is basically what the manual hubs are when they are locked

Well, all be it a noob, when I had my frontera they engaged automatically, but I usually had to do the reverse trick? Perhaps a trait of that particular hub :nenau

Hardly ever happens so not really bothered me, I just get on with it. Not tried my newer one with fixed hubs but I do remember a member called cadmonkey had it happen to his fixed hubs occasionally but again just reveresed i few feet and it was fine.

auto hubs you have to reverse to unlock them

After selecting 2WD you shouldn't have got wind up:confused: the light bit could be as simple as a sticky switch. Might pay to have a closure look at the linkage & selector guide

Fair enough, no hardship then.

I wonder if it is possible for the light to lie? What activates and deactivates the light? :nenau

first off i unlocked the hubs and carried on but it was pulling very heavily to the left, so then i stopped and reversed, i had to go back about 2 meters before the light went off

Could the N/S hub got stuck partly locked & was causing drag hence the pull to the left but reversing has helped it free off into the unlocked position:nenau

dont think so you can hear them unlocking when you twist them

Ok wasn't sure as never had them, just trying to think of things. I know the time I got trans wind up you could barely steer the thing knocked it into 2WD & it must have released as I suddenly could steer again

It has to be to do with the selector and not the hub. Maybe the rock of the engine/truck going backwards was sufficient to disengage the transfer box ?

When ever I use 4wd low, the light on the dash comes on, but does not go off when I drop it back into 2wd. I tried, re-selecting, and moving the transfer lever back and forwards, but it stays on.

The same thing, reverse a couple of meters, and it has gone off the next time I check. Never worked out why it does it though, it's one of those things I mean to look into properly, but then forget.
