Pulled into a field entrance last night (To go lamping before any one makes a wise crack). Unlocked the gate and went to restart the truck but it would not turn over as if the starter had died. Battery OK and we can short out he starter and get it running but just cant get it to turn over.

And what a bloody place to put the starter.:(

Any idea's to try?

Auto box was in gear when stopped. Thinkin it might be that the truck thinks its still in gear so that why it wont start?

could be a gearbox sensor as you say - will it go into neutral and let you push it to check it has?

it seems a bit of a new truck to have fallen for the dodgy ignition switch problem....but if you can make the starter turn then its clearly either a sensor issue or something between motor and ignition switch....

just in case, try turning the ignition V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y and see if it sparks up....

Not too new for ignition switch to be faulty, that problem rears its head a newer models too. Inhibiter switch on auto box, don't know where thats located. Got to say though I'd be taking off the steering cowls and playing with the ignition switch.

christ don't the buggers ever sort anything these days? LOL

The inhibitor switch stops the engine being stated in gear.
It activates when brake pedal applied when stationary, you can usually hear a clicking by gear stick, its a little plunger which locks the gear stick.
I think you should do as posted and turn the ignition key slowly and when in start position if not turning give the key a little wiggle in start position if you know what i mean.
Or remove the ignition plug and use wire to cross terminals and see if it cracks over, if no then your looking at wiring to starter or starter solenoid

Many thanks all :thumbs

I will be working on this today so fingers crossed will be sorted.

little fuses by the battery. check em all

also check all the leads to starter

The 2.7 engine has a relay to the starter down by the battery, may be one on the 3.0 as well, worth a look.

Right we have found the problem to be the selector located on the gear box which tells the ignition relay that the gear box is in Neutral or Park ready for starting.

At the moment I have bypassed the wiring to say its always in neutral so will start in any gear.

Can anyone tell me if this part is repairable or does anyone have a second hand one?

Also can the selector be removed and the vehicle used?

Well I've finally gone from non starter to starting and only going forward.

I've changed the ATF the old stuff was very dirty. Took it out for a test this morning and it was doing some weird stuff. Started off ok but when I got to 2500 rpm the revs went up and the motor slowed down. I then had to take my foot off the acc to allow the revs to drop then it went off down the road again until 2500 rpm and dropped off again.

I turn off the OD and managed to get to 50 mph.

Still cant get Reverse, Neutral, 1st or second. Only drive but does not seem to change through drive?

Any idea's?

Did find that fuse 8 (10amp) had blown to.

I am starting to think I may have an ECM failure

I have got the following codes

1405 NATS Fault
1004 fuel cut system
0504 automatic transmission communication line
0403 Accelerator Position sensor

all but the 1405 seem to point towards an ECM issue

Are these a one fits all or are they different for each model?

You say you have bypassed the inhibitor switch. Are you leaving this in place once you have started the engine or disconnecting it. Your problems could be down to the ECM thinking it is in neutral when its not.

The bypass from the battery has now been removed. I have just reset the fault codes and restarted with no problem but still trying to go forward when in netural and no reverse. Only problem now is i pulled into my drive and i'm getting nearer and nearer my house :doh so will need to get reverse soon

Just had the man with the PC that can and found all seems OK but stuck in 1 gear.

Any idea's

Hope you get it sorted :nenau

I hate electrical faults & would never own a automatic & very happy me Mavs non ecu due to the off road abuse its getting :sly :naughty

Wish i could give some advice :(

Good luck :thumbs

Cheers ADZ. Think I my be getting there slowly. I'm going to try a filter change in the gear box tomorrow as someone else in New Zealand was having same issue and this fixed it.

Need to try the cheap things before we look at box replacement or touching down a county lane.

Just leave it in Milton Keynes :augie :lol Keep the Lane Green :lol :thumbs

Must take my hat off to you :bow I would of needed new panels by now as i would of kicked the crap out of it :doh

Nearly at the kicking bit. What is most annoying is its only happened sitting on the drive. If i was doing 70 and it happened I might have more of an idea but the engine was not even running and it did it

It's odd how things can just happen like that

Hopefully it will be something silly  :thumb2 Good luck mate :thumbs
