had maverick for about 6 weeks never been great starter recently changed battery and glow plugs not made any difference. starter turning over no prob but today she will not start even with jump . also now have air bag warning light flashing at me.any help would be appreciated

Check all battery lads etc, they have a habit of cracking through but not breaking off, could also be the starter, have you tried hitting it with something heavy (no seriously, hit the starter) this can sometimes get a reluctant starter to kick in, dislodges dirt from brushes or similar.

leads seem to be ok starter turning engine over but it just will not fire

Save yourself some time - check you are using the right ignition key (see starting problems - recent topic!!!)

only got one key with mav charged bat last night still no joy this morn :(
got mav towed to steep hill rolled down she started within 5 mtres
has started of the key all day spoke to someone today said to check see if it is drawin in air when lyin overnight
will have to wait see if it starts in mornin

Hello and welcome Post2124.

Is this another problem with diesel fuel lines letting air in to the fuel supply?.

We had a lady member a short while ago with very similar problems,

This could remind the other members about the problem she had.

If i can find the thread i will put the link in here.

spoke to mechanic yesterday who said he had problem with customers mav found out it was drawing air in round top of tank checked mine this morn seems to be ok still wont start this morn but started with bump start checked fuel lines seem to b quite rusty over axle wonder if this is the prob

had enough changed starter yesterday what a pig of a job(£155 exchange unit) changed fuel filter slow to start again byt got it started ran fine all day and started fine all day went to friends last night when came out wouldnt start called AA they couldent get it started either got them to tow it to local garage this morning will just have to wait and see what they say

Hello Post2124,

I take it that this means its not the starter then?.
Don’t you hate it when all you want to do is sort it so you bite the bullet and go for what looks like being the problem!.

Seems strange how you actually got it started and it ran it all day,
looked as if you had it sorted only for the same problem to be back again later the same day.

What did the AA man say?, did he give you any clues or anything to look for that might have be causing the problem?.

I still am looking at the member that had air in the fuel supply, Can i rule this out?.

Cannot see for looking if it is a diesel or not!.

Is it?

the AA guy wasnt a great deal of help tried to start it with a tow which has done the trick in the past wouldnt go said it had too mutch fuel and to leave it till the morning and try it again no joy so thats why phoned them to get it to garage mechanic had quick look and said there was no fuel at filter but was going to try fitting hand pump to see if he could get fuel also said that he had had one in recently with same sort of problem found out it was fuel tank

Yes i Have had the same problem it turned out to be fuel heater relay which was not heating the glow plugs long enough so i sorted it by running a wire form the battery into a push button switch in the cab and back to the glow plugs, Heat for 15secs and bingo starts first time note you only have to use this if the car has been stood overnight or long periods, hope this helps.

Have tried running wire direct to glow plugs didnt seem to make any difference but who knows what the garage will come up with . Have left it there so fingers crossed they may come up with something and soon.
Havent had it long but must admit do like it sooner its back the better.

This coukd b part of the prob as heater light only stays on for about 3 seconds when you switch in on

Got mav back today seems to b starting ok Will wait till the morning if it starts then we will know weve cracked the problem
so will reserve judgement till then

Well it started fine sat morn after second attempt which is beter than ten /fifteen attempts .Seams to have been drawing fuel back while standing for long periods .Mechanic thought it was from filter pump houseing (£128 plus vat) rather than fit new one he put manual pump with nonreturn valve in fuel line seam s to have done trick hope it stays that way  now have new prob thermostat now gone just as well thats an easy fix

I had a similar problem with a diesel Vectra a few years ago, the RAC man flattened 2 batteries trying to start it.
In the end he sprayed WD40 directly into the intake (removed air filter first) the engine kicked into life on first turn of the key.
It then ran great for the next 2 days. So when it failed again, I used the same trick.
The garage then were able to locate the fault and it was air getting into the fuel lines and the fuel draining back into the tank.
The WD40 acted as a fuel and allowed the engine to rev higher than the starter motor would let it and so the fuel was drawn through and was then able to run.
This is a quick get you going fix, but not recommended for continued use.
Might help some one,
TIP carry a tin of WD40 with you....

well that didnt last long.started fine all weekend mon morn nothing.checked every thing bat, tried the earths still wouldnt start asked mechanic he put it down to starter(new two weeks ago) .took it back to motor factors got it exchanged after four days, put it in last tues been running since apart from two days waiting on thermostat housing to arrive after i cracked old one but it seems to be going ok now so hope to have trouble free motoring for a long time to come
