noisy spare wheel bracket

ok, I cant take it anymore!!! The spare wheel bracket is ridiculously noisy and squeeky. I fixed it once ages ago, and it was fine for a long while, but now, everythig i TRY doesnt work!!

as far as I can see, the bracket INSIDE the door, has movement, and is squeeking on the door frame. What can I do to fix it, as the usual silicone spray/wd40 isnt working at all now....!!!

Hi I seeem to remember that thhe noise comes from a broken spot weld which coulld be fixed wwith a self tapping scrrew. I cant find the thread but it is somewhere at the back of my mine. My wheel carrier has been ok even though I carry two bikes on it. Excuse my typing as I am using my.neww Vega tablet and I think my touch technique needs some fine tuning. Regards bri

I sold a door for one a while back. where the bracket bolts on the door the door panel itself was split in all directions

the self tapping screw idea sounds good, may investigate that!

cncfabs-I will double check, but I am 99% sure it isnt split etc, everythign looks really good inside, except as Bri suggests, a spot weld looks to be broken...!:thumb2

Years ago on here the fix was bolts straight through brackets and door. Can't remember exactly where but I do remember that. It's the warm weather that does it. Don't worry it'll be Easter soon so it's bound to cool down and stop being noisy:doh

ok chaps, heres an update.

I took the inner door panel off AGAIN on Saturday, and finally found the spot welds that had come loose. They were up the panel facing you, left side as you look at it. The inner bracket is welded both sides. I re drilled the spot welds and used self tapping screws to fix, then copious amounts of lithium grease. not a sound now. see how long it lasts!

on prev t2, mine rattled til one day drove off with door open, only slowly
on a camp site. realised and automatically did emergency stop.

the door shut so hard it sorted itself, mind not having spare on door
reduced rattle prior to that too, as found hitching up a pita with
an alko stabilizer hitch.

yup, if i removed the wheel, pretty silent, although I have the hearing of a hawk, so could still hear the bracket noise even without the wheel on!

Jim, very true, but to be fair, the noise was horrendous!! the tiniest miniscule squeek seemed to be amplified ten fold...!

Bri, I've wondered about a spare wheel bike carrier, but I'm a bit worried about adding extra weight to the door hinges and the spare wheel mounting. Mine wobbles a bit, is it supposed to?

I had to remove the plastic door panel, then, inline with the bracket, you can see the fabrication of the inner door frame panel running in line with the bracket. Look closely at that and you can see the tiny spot welds running up either side. on mine, the spot welds on the left were off, hardly noticeable, but a helping hand reveals they move ever so slightly causing the sqweeek.

I drilled out the broken spot welds, and used self tapping screws outside in (theres no way doing it inside out). so far its been ok.

On my terrano the spare wheel is for show - I've had the truck 3 years now, never had the cover off and don't even know if there's air in it
