Hi, I have a 2005 Terrano 2.7 diesel with 34,000 on the clock and have a few concerns that I'm trying to figure out. I've had the vehicle about 4 months now and seem to have all the noises going at the moment . I can't think of any other words to describe them! I have searched the site and and as you do, you think the worst i.e gearbox / clutch / propshaft etc.

In any case the noises are:-

1) a ticking/whirring sound from what sounds like behind the dash mid to passenger side. It disappears or certainly goes quiter when the clutch is depressed. It's not excessively loud but it is annoying. The clutch operation itself seems fine.

2) a loud whining sound from the front of the vehicle that sometimes includes grinding when I am slowing down through the gears and turning either left or right. It is not the stops that I have read about on full lock. The whining is there even when I am slowing down at low speed through the gears in a straight line. This problem especially the whining seems to be getting worse.

3) Vibration / shuddering - when going through the gears at lower speeds, almost like you are in the wrong gear (but your'e in the right gear). Not a problem as you pick up speed.

As mentioned above the Terrano is low mileage and it has a Nissan dealership service history so I don't think it has been abused. All reservoirs are full. I'm hoping that it is not serious / costly and also hoping that the symptoms all relate to one problem.

Any pointers appreciated :thumb2

does the viscous fan look ok? Anything sticking into it like a cable tie etc?

Could also be clutch release bearing maybe.

Hard to suggest anything with regards the sound vibration, but there is a suggestion there that it is gearbox related, perhaps an oil change and some molyslip is due? If you do get the oil done, get the rear diff done as well, just in case the sound is misplaced.

The tickling whirring regarding the clutch sounds like it could be the thrust bearings for the clutch.

I hope you are in 2 wheel drive and not 4 wheel drive.:doh:doh

Check the prop shaft for loose bolts or worn uj's

Cheers for the replies chaps.

I am a little concerned in case it is the clutch as is mentioned. I'll have a look at fan etc at the weekend or earlier if I can. It does look as if it won't be a one part fix all type of thing

you could do a clutch test, bit risky, but, handbrake on, fifth gear, clutch down, pedal down release clutch, should stall more or less straight away, if it tries to drive some distance, clutch problem. Dont do that too many times.

I'll have a look to see if worn uj's for the vibration and also do the clutch test. Cheers. Driving to work this morning the whine from front was quite evident. I'm leaning towards a power steering problem but not certain. Not a good time to pay for repairs but I suppose there isn't a good time.

torn engine mount, that will cause the fan to rub and put strain on everything else. that will be your problem :augie

get a crow bar and have a leaver about . often the passenger side one

Hadn't considered a torn engine mount. Is it difficult to change / fix? Will need to have a look also with other suggestions. Had a look on Milners for engine mount part but couldn't see anything listed.

Thanks for your suggestions / advice.

I have always had a juddering type sound at low revs, I thought it was a trait of the MAV,
How do I check for torn engine mount??

I read this and my thoughts are that problem 1/. could be thrust bearing noise/actuator arm noise.
It does it when it is cold and when it is hot and is annoying, but seems to be quieter when it is warming up, weird I know.
Problem 3, I have had same noises and vibration on both a 2003 and the 2005 3.0ltr Terrano that I currently have, so I think that is just down to general build quality, i.e. quite poor, little soundproofing and all the plastic panels dont fit very well, if you dont rev it quite high in each gear it does sound like you are doing 15mph in fifth gear and everythings falling apart, but it doesn't.
Also, only seems to make these noises with the diesel engine, when we had the 2.4 petrol engine Maverick (which we loved) it was a lot quieter and no shuddering or vibration.
Your problem 2, sorry but no idea at all about that one, apart from find out quick what it is as does not sound like anything normal that I can think of.
mileage is 63 thou on ours
