I came back from doing a job yesterday unhitched a trailer gave the truck it's annual jet wash and hitched up another trailer.
Before I left I checked the trailer lights & found they didn't work nor the tail lights on the truck or dash lights.
Any one any idea where I should start to look (fuse / relay ) & should I only wash the truck biannually.

Check the small wiring loom behind the bumper. Start from the light fittings and work your way to the vehicle body. You should find one joint between the lights and loom. You may also find that the tow bar wiring has been picked up with a series of joints behind the bumper which is exposed to the elements.

For what it's worth it sounds like an earth with it taking out all the lights.

The fact the truck side lights have worked for years, and after plugging in the trailer they don't then I would suggest either the trailer has a fault, plug most likely, or there is a fault on the vehicle socket that by messing with it, shorted out a couple of wires at the back of the trailer socket.

Job one. Disconnect trailer.
two. find and replace blown fuse located in panel under steering wheel.
three. if fuse blows immediately, check trailer socket on vehicle.
four. If fuse sorts out truck, fault is on trailer wiring.

Note don't be surprised that by plugging in the trailer again at this point, the fuse goes again...

So check for shorts on trailer plug, then check for chafing of cable against chassis of trailer, then look at where the cable enters each light pod.

Hope it helps.

Had similar on my first T2. I took the light clusters out of the bumper, disconnected everything, cleaned and dried all the contacts, reassembled the units, checked they worked, and then drowned the whole lot in dampstart.

Kept them dry and working for three years.

Ok so I have replaced the 10amp fuse & lights are working again. Still not sure what caused it yet & for some reason the audible warning on side lights doesn't work either.

I would check your tow socket on the motor to make sure everything is still ok, it could be a wiring fault on one of the trailers that has blown the fuse:augie

I had that with my surf...turned out the tow electric wire had been rubbing and was shorting the lights

I had this fault - Take out both the rear light clusters and check the pvc coating on the wires haven’t worn through by rubbing on the chassis. It causes the fuse to blow intermittently when you go over bumps in the road when the bare wires touch and ground on the chassis.
