Any help would be really appreciated
many thanks Lee

P.S great forum/club:confused:

I assume you have checked the ATF level ?
Check with engine running in Park best done hot there is a hot and cold mark on the dipstick.
Hope its nice and pink if its brown and smelly then its probably bad news.

If the level drops reverse is the first gear to drop out and is often the first gear to fail as well.

Sadly its usually the box that's done for but lets start optimistic.

this happened to me in my mistral , ...... first thing to do is to start the engine , handbrake on and foot on footbrake , then move the selector back and forwards between ALL the gears , do it a few times . at least 4 or 5times ....then when you it put it in reverse ..... does it lurch or jump ? ....also very important you check the atf level AND COLOUR it should be a nice cherry red colour ..... if its dark brown or black , you have a problem .

Be interesting to see if it reverses when cold in the morning, try it before checking the atf level as you need to do that in gear with the engine running and that will warm the atf and that will cloud the cold reverse test, Rick

Do not forget to put some modern ATF in if an ATF change rescues the box.
Fuchs Titan range takes some beating and they are backwards convertible so you can even use a fully synthetic fluid.
The original spec was a Dexron 11 or 111 so you can use Fuchs Titan 4400 as a good upgrade got mine from Milner OR at a good price use it in my Santa Fe now and in my previous r3mR Terrano.
Dont forget you need to do two changes over a couple of weeks as there is no torque converter drain.

The ultimate is probably the Fuchs Titan 5000 / 5000 SL range Opie Oils do these.

Hi thanks for the great advice. Tried it this morning and it seems to have sorted its self so i am gonna try an oil change with the fuchs titan as recommended by macabethiel can anyone tell me the exact quantity and is there a filter in there

at a guess i would say between 1200 and 1500kg but if the oil is worn it wont help gonna change it tomorrow

They take around 3.6 Litres per oil change, no filter that is a service item as far as I know - probably a built in screen filter.

You will need to do the same again after 100 miles as they hold around 9-10 Litres of fluid but the rest is in the torque convertor so its a dilution effect.
