can i recon this myself?

They are fairly easy to do as I done one for a rover 100, just depends what's gone wrong inside, if its the rotor windings for instance, that's not somthing you can do yourself, but if its just the brushes, that you can do

if it is not turning at all and the solenoid is operating then it will most likely be the contacts worn/not making or even just some debris stopping them making, well worth a strip down to find out or if you do not feel confidant pop it along to your local auto electricians, they can change the solenoid complete with contacts, two screws and a wire, but often the screws are tight to remove and easily damaged, Rick

have already stripped and cleaned it still no movement, am going to order a new one tomorrow

Did you get to see the heavy copper contacts? they are at the terminal end of the solenoid, some cannot be stripped others can, not sure on the diesel as I have Petrols different starter all together, solenoids are far cheaper than starters, to test the starter itself connect neg to the casing and pos to the other solenoid contact that has the wire going into the motor if it kicks hard and spins then just replace the solenoid, Rick

the solenoid pushed the starter up to engage the flywheel but on the other contact you just sparks and doesn't spin

You need to be using jump leads for the test, if it sparks heavy but does not spin then there is an internal short on the motor, not much you can do, Rick

i was using jump leads, the sparks aren't really all that big to be honest, am going to take it to a recon place tomorrow and see if it's worth getting fixed or not

If it does not turn and you are using jump leads then it should be burning part of the terminal away each time you flash it, so suggests to me one of the 4 brushes is stuck and not connecting the commutator, well worth getting someone to look at it, Rick

i will let you know the outcome :thumbs

I had a problem with mine, thought it was the battery and it turned out the lead from the battery to the starter was corroded on the inside so they fitted a new heavy duty lead and no problems since. Just another thing to through into the pot for you to check as mine always started on jump leads even with the corroded cable.
