well after limping the truck home when the clutch pedal broke the bloody thing wouldn't start, so charged battery and fine unitl had been turned off for an hr then no charge again, i had the battery tested and they said its fine, had the alternator tested and they said thats fine aswell, i did replace a broken battery clamp thinking that would be the problem but it is still there :nenau

Starts fine if jump started, also bump starts fine, couldn't happen at a worse time i need all the money we have for the move to wales but i do need to get it sorted a.s.ap, ideas on a postcard chaps

If the battery is good then sounds like you have something draining it, after a run disconnect one battery lead and with everything off touch it on again several times looking for a spark which will indicate something is drawing power, if you have a test meter with AMPs function then you can put that between the lead and the battery which will give an idea how much is being drawn but meter wants to be minimum 10 amps, alternatively you can use fuses start with say 10 amp if it does not blow then go down to say 5 until one blows that will give an idea of the draw, but if it happens quickly then either the draw is high 50 amps plus or the battery is bad, Rick

I fear making any suggestion on Facebook, but on my way home I was thinking about the alternator - don't they have some sort of brake pump type thing on them? Just wandering if the issues with the clutch may have in some way put extra pressure on the braking affecting the alternator...?!

thus breaking the alternator..

I need to give it more thought, but just thought id put it out there...don't tell Neil, he might beat me up with his superior knowledge.:bow

vacuum pump, that was it...probably nothing to do with it....!:thumbs

pay no attention to neil, he's in a bad mood because he's having to work away from home again :lol

ha ha no worries!

I was just trying to mention some things that I didn't realise had been gone through, trying to think of what can affect the starting, drain of battery etc but seems likely its what you say - the alternator!

I started to wonder then if the clutch going and the constant stopping of the engine affected the alternator in some way hence the vac pump suggestion..:bow

i'm still stumped, i'm going to try ricks suggestion but first i have a theory of my own which will be proven right or wrong in about an hours time

having 1 or more cells down in your battery will act as a load , draining your battery , it will appear to charge ok , ......just a thought ...... check battery , seems to me you have a current drain , try a different battery .

good luck with the move mate :thumb2

just to confirm, as above, have you checked the connector under the water bottle? the bolt corrodes...

hmmm, what were you using to jump it from ? Can you swap batteries so as to eliminate that ?
How many times did you start it when on jump leads? Just wondering if there's an other fault being missed as you got lucky, if you see what I mean
Ign switch can get you the same result

no sparks from the battery lead rick :nenau

Then after a run disconnect a battery lead overnight, if on reconnection in the morning it starts then vehicle drain, if battery dead then internal battery short, get new battery and tell the people that tested your battery they are muppets, Rick

well your test proves right rick :bow i charged battery last night and left it disconnected, re-connected this morn and its dead,

it's the only real way to test a battery! I have had them where the green indicator stays on and they pass a 'drop test' leave them overnight and the voltage drops :nenau

new battery on, £130 later still got same issues gettin pi$$ed off now

Right then, jump lead it with your old battery and see what happens.
Are you sure there's no issues with the starter, like clicking etc slow cranking?
Have you checked ign switch?

My starter motor eventually gave up, cranked like it was flat and drew over double the amps.....had to replace cables as it melted stuff
