Hi All

I was driving along and there was like a bump as if it had jumped out of gear. I stopped. It was still in gear but there was no drive. I tried it in 4 wd but still no drive. Could this be the clutch or the gearbox or both problem. Thanks in advance for advice.

Make sure the 4x4 lever is pushed all the way home, do you have the 4x4 light on the dash.
If this is OK, have a look underneath to check your prop shaft is OK.
How does your clutch pedal feel, have you tried putting it in a gear and turning the key quickly to see if it jumps forward.

Have you got any noises or can you smell clutch slip?
If everything is definitely engaged and still no drive, could be output shaft

if your transfer lever is def in 2H then it has to be your clutch mate is my guess

On both occasions that my clutch failed on my Terrano I got the following symptoms.
Heard a bang, just as drive was being taken up when setting off.
Nothing at all before
Lack of drive
Clutch pedal felt fine
Wouldn't go into gear with engine running
No smells at all

I think it has to be the transfer box is in neutral or not engaging properly.
As firebobby said does the 4x4 light on dash come on when 4x4 is selected etc?. If it is a selector problem it could be as simple as gearbox mounts gone and gearbox has moved close to the tunnel not allowing you to select.
If it was the clutch it would have needed to burn out completely to lose drive or torn the centre right out of friction plate both would be unlikely with out you noticing some unusual noise or smell.
So this only leaves more serious internal damage as said by Trenches & Tracks output shaft my money is onless serious selector issue of some sort.

Arthur, simple things first. As said do check that the 4wd is not in neutral. After that check if you can get it into gear without engine running and not with the engine running, if you get these results it sounds more likely to be the clutch.
Both my clutches and I know others have done the same, the centre rips away from the friction plate where all the springs are. No I had not been towing or driving hard when mine went.

Based on that it has to be clutch

If the clutch has gone, you shouldn't get drive, have you tried putting it gear and starting the engine to see if it pulls away, if it does and there's no slipping, I would have thought it maybe the master or slave cylinder.
Get someone to press the clutch pedal and have a look to see if the slave cylinder arm moves.

Good idea to check the slave is activating but keep your fingers well out of the way.

I can put it in gear and start the egine no drive

Tim who services the motor as it now he will make a start on it about tuesday I will let you no what he fineds

Yes good idea, check under drivers door area whilst someone pressed clutch pedal and see if the arm going to gearbox is moving. If so then suspect internals of clutch ect :thumb2

no drive

Hi all

Terrano back on the road the centre of the clutch had broken. glad its just the clutch and not the gear box as well

no drive

Hi all

Back on the road the clutch centre at parted from the rest of the clutch. Thanks for all your advise

Glad it's sorted dude, don't suppose you managed any pics? :thumb2

Is that the friction plate?

yes the plate with the linings on it, it is actually in two parts, the centre bit that has splines onto the gearbox first motion shaft and the outer part that has the linings and is squashed between the pressure plate and the flywheel the two are joined with springs that help to take the shock out of a suddenly released clutch, if a motor is treated poorly in this respect then the springs and metal that contacts them break down and the outer part spins on its own, Rick
