My memory is appalling, but cannot ever remember doing "tappets" on my previous 2.4's and as they have 2 inlet 1 exhaust per pot I think I would, so yes hydraulic tappets, the other thing these suffer from is timing chain rattle, and if bad wears through the water pump housing, so worth a check, symptoms are rattle at startup till the hydraulic tensioner kicks in, if yours does this get the chain and associated parts replaced ASAP, I did a full write up on this a few years ago, Rick

Replace it, that's what fixed mine, didn't want to bother trying to service or repair

If its a noisy tappet due to a worn hydraulic valve lifter I would use a listening tube to try to pin it down as to which one.
A simple pipe you can even use plastic sink waste pipe can act as a listening tube but I prefer alluminium tube - if the noise is present place one end of the tube against the rocker top and see if its very loud, likewise if its the chain placing tube end near the crankcase cover should identify where the noise is coming from. Be careful you don't get it tangled up with the fan etc.
A listening tube is what the water board use to find leaks on the street - thiers has a little telephone moulded ear piece on the end of a solid wooden pole.

Check plug leads
If it's intermittent more likely to be a carbon plug lead that has broken down also check plug cap connector, spark plugs generally work or don't work in my experience. Carbon leads tend to break down easier in cold weather due to engine heat, the engine heat can dry them out then they are okay until another day!
Folks start with plugs as they tend to be cheaper, if they have not been changed in the last 20k miles worth doing anyway.

Is the tickover rough?, a misfire would cause that, engine would be shaking about

Then I would leave well alone, it is not unheard of for a tappet to lose a bit of oil and make a noise for a bit but they usually recover, Rick
