I am minded to agree it's a car derived van if the maximum laden weight does not exceed 2 Tons ?

That's what I thought but from the Nissan Specification within the link in my first post it states a Maximum Laden Weight of the the truck is 2510kg which puts it over the 2000kg you mentioned. :nenau

Would like to have faith in Pete's training though, seems a sensible was of dealing with the problems of weight and speed. Plus his knowledge should be bang up to date.

I believe that the Police can only use your vehicle plated weight to prove it is over 2000kg. Does your V5 log book show a plated or gross weight or is there one riveted to your vehicle somewhere. If not then you should be ok. The Police do not work with Handbooks or vehicle brochures but with proper tangible evidence.

Might be worth talking to a Police Traffic Office next time you see one. Might be a long wait if it's like Derbyshire !

Another one for Banshee to check then :)
I drive a standard LWB Terrano (for now anyway, just failed MOT on rust today)
This came up in Banshee's 'Strange Tax Bands' thread but did not want to highjack his thread.
I was curious and thought it might save someone some hassle if the speed limits were indeed different.

Same here regarding Traffic Police unless there is a festival on then suddenly they come over from the mainland and are everywhere.

I took some old batteries & metal to the scrap yard on Saturday. On the way out my Truck weighed (with our lass sat in it & half a tank of fuel) 1860 KG. With me standing on the weigh bridge it went up to 1940 KG............ So working on a full tank, seven adults & any luggage the weight could be close on 2500 KG or more. I realise that our trucks don't come under "dual purpose".

This has got me thinking now & I'm also thinking if I've been told incorrectly by our class instructor :nenau

As a for instance..........
I was chatting to my mate earlier regarding when he took his CPC & his instructor said you could drive a Artic tractor unit with a class two licence providing the fifth wheel was locked or removed................ Our instructor
said you didn't need to remove the fifth wheel or lock it off to drive it.
Working on the above paragraph, who's right & who's wrong

The below web site talks about vehicles under 2000 MGW & I draw your attention to campers as this could be where the misunderstanding has occurred :nenau
I know that I drive a van with a MGW of 3.5 tonnes & I know my speed limits are as my previous post. I apologise for confusing folk even more as I was only going on what my instructor (whom appears to be wrong) told us.

hate to sound pedantic, to my knowledge but there hasnt been class 1/2/3 on hgv for 20 years, though wouldnt think it as every one still refers to as hgv and classes.

you see big firms advertising for hgv classes drivers not LGV drivers.

rigid over 7.5 tonne is a C
upto 7.5 is C1

No difference now between 2 and 3 ie 2 or more axles.

class 1 is C+E, believe at one time there was a restriction for drawbars though of course Id say if you reverse a drag trailer, ie turntable, you've got 2 pivot points against a fifth wheel's 1 pivot.

ref locking the fifth or removal, many owners of yank tractor units on the display scene do just this, some if lucky then get them down rated to 7.5 tonne too. I know a guy with a 6x4 kenworth aerodyne cabover, which with wind in right direction can just squeeze under the 7.5t though his isnt as has a C+E ticket.

No need to apologise mate, if we can't trust our trainers then who can we trust. They are supposed to be at the front edge of knowledge and quotable on that information.

Do wonder where that leaves us on the whole "Terrano Commercial" Car or van limits. From all I have read I am thinking the information points towards van limits. Think we need to get the MGW off a vehicle plate as suggested.

I've not got my truck with me today otherwise I'd check at lunch, I will have a looksie when I get home though

A LWB Terrano assuming you have rear windows will be classed as a Car i.e.old Group A
now after 2013 called Group B on your licence.

Not sure if this link helps https://www.gov.uk/old-driving-licence-categories

It was more the Short Wheel Base Commercials like Banshee's I was thinking of as they are brought and driven as a car with personal preference of looks and style of the driver or maybe wanting the extra security of panels instead of windows in the rear. However they may fall under a different speed limits as the could be actually classed as Vans not cars in the eyes of the law.

Thanks for the link though, interesting reading :thumb2

Right :freak3:

Could have sworn they were both the same when I did the Tax online but you know me :splif

Banshee, where are you hiding that 3rd seat in your truck then :lol

Would there be any insurance issues if it is on a car policy as apposed to a Van policy. Although thinking they must know what they are insuring when you type in the reg.
More and more questions.
Hi,
If you need any help with insurance at ll then please feel free to drop me a line.
Regards,

So that would be.

Max Gross Vehicle Weight. 2510kg
Max Gross Train Weight. 5310kg
Max Front Axle Load. 1160kg
Max Rear Axle Load. 1460kg

Sounds to me a Terrano SWB Commercial is classed as a van. What With the Max Gross Weight, Vehicle category and Body class.

So shall we talk Vehicle Down Plating and could it be relevant :augie :lol:lol

Anyone.....:nenau
