newbie from sussex and needs help

Hi All

I have just sold my Shogun:augie,and brought a 03 terrano 2.7 tdi which i will use to pull a caravan (new hobby to me aswell) But ive started to think ive done the wrong thing.
1. Very loud banging when turning on full lock ????
2 seems to pull badly to the left. the front tyres need replacing as worn on edges,had the tracking checked they said its fine ??
3. seems a lot of playing in the steering.
I hope to get it all done as i like the thing but the problems are off putting at the mo. Any ideas would be great to a new owner Many thanks Bryan

have a look at the quick links section for replacement of steering stops, tyres worn at the edges probably torsion bars needing adjustment (couple of nuts half way down the chassis)
these do tend to have a fair bit of play in the steering but parts are cheap and readily available from ebay or milners . you will find all the imformation you need on here and plenty of good advice from more knowledgable folk than me, just have a good read of the download sections

Banging on full lock is almost certainly steering stops - dead easy fix! Turn the wheels to full lock (either way) and look on the back of the hub - you will see what looks like the head of a large bolt, about 20mm in diameter just forward of the axle, that's the steering stop (or one of them, there are four, two on each hub) whack a blob of grease on this bolt, then look just behind the axle on the same hub backplate, there will be another one there, put another blob of grease on that one, then repeat for the other side of the car - job done! You can buy the nylon covers that go on these bolts, but to be honest they are a waste of time, they last no time at all. I grease mine every two or three months and that cures the problem.

The steering on these trucks is "agricultural" to say the least, mine has probably 2-3" of play at the steering wheel, you can't make a comparison with a modern rack & pinion set -up, I was told by someone more knowledgeable than me that they share a lot of the steering components with early 1990's Ford Transits, and my memory of those was that they had lots of play in the steering too.

Hi welcome to the club.

Breaks pulling to the left probably means that either the caliper on the left is sticking, or the caliper on the right is not working that well. (sticking).

First point of call is to check the sliding pins on each caliper, they sieze, and most of the time only require removing, cleaning and regreasing.
2 on each caliper.

So far, both fixes for your Terrano only need a bit of TLC and a bit of grease.


These are common issues and need a quick check while servicing.

if it has done a fair mileage then most likely the steering box will take a couple of turns on the adjusting nut on top, not the easiest to get to but well worth the effort, Rick
