Hi newbie from notts so be gentle.currently got a 93 terrano an oldie but a goody.recently has developed a annoying noise, the mrs reckons it sounds like the things you used to fasten on your bike spokes when you were a kid. 8)

welcome

welcome to the club mate  a tenner well spent.is it clicking with the engine running and car stationary or when the car is driving.have you checked the tryes to make sure there is nothing stuck in them.i have a gravel drive and very often drive up the road with pebbles stuck in the tread clicking away until they drop out.never over look the obvious.

Hi there and welcome aboard. Mine made a similar noise when the auto locking hub went. Have a search for the previous threads regarding these things. The auto locking hubs are the big round chunk of metal in the centre of the front wheels, one of mine actually over heated and started smoking but they normally don't get so bad. Compare the feel of the hubs on each side when you have driven a few miles but watch your fingers just in case they are getting hot.

Thanks for the warm welcome, its not the hubs or stones in tyres, had them checked.local mec suggested that it might be either a cracked fan or a pully, does this sound right :?:

cracked pulley

is it a petrol or deisel?if you go to your profile you can put all your motors details in your signature then everyone knows what you are driving.

have you had the bonnet up and had a good listen to see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from.could be a dry bearing.if its a cracked fan or pulley it should be visible if you look carefully.what sort of state are the belts in?any frayed bits etc that you can see.

Hi its a petrol.thanks for the advice,i will have a good look tomorrow to see if i can pinpoint it

Hi angryangler & welcome to the club  I'm wondering if it could be that your tappets need adjusting :? does it sound a bit like an old ford escort/fiesta

welcome to the site, i'm quiet new here myself, but love it, some great advice and knowledge about.

Hi there angry
and welcome, sounds like teeth chattering when your filling up

Hi all, had an hour under it this mornin tryin to pinpoint the problem and I think its the alternator pulley but I gave it a good coating of good old WD40 and its made no difference :|
We are off to Cornwall at the end of next week so I have got AA 'wiv bells on'

The fan on the water pump do crack after a while so have a close look at the base of the fins.
I had to replace the fan blades when I did the water pump as the blades were cracked good and proper.

Have you checked your alternator belt on the inside to see if it has frayed ?

You could try disconnecting the alternator belt and turn the alternator pulley by hand to see if it clicks on it's own.

Just a couple of simple tests

hi all ,thanks for all the advice finally sussed noise apparently its the water pump bearings so i bin told, been advised to keep spraying WD behind fan, does this sound right as i thought it was a sealed unit to the bearings :?: :?:

If the bearings are on their way out WD40 won't do anything  If it is the pump then the best thing you can do is replace it because if it fails you fun a risk of over heating the engine & your repair bill will go through the roof :(
