Well, since the snowfall we experienced here earlier in the year, I have been looking for something that would allow me to at least get out through my own gate should such conditions return again. I had my sights set on a Japanese vehicle (Shoguns, etc) and really only very recently gave the Terranos any thought. This was mostly due to the engine troubles I had read of on the Mitsubishis and from that point on I extended my search to include the Nissan.

I've been scouring the adverts for quite some time waiting on something solid to come up. I looked at a 1999 model only to find that both sills were rotten and the passenger side inner arch non existent so passed on that one. A Fourtrak turned up but it was rough as well and I was starting to think "Land Cruiser" albeit an old cheapie.

It was at this point that a 1998 SWB Terrano 2.7 TDI was advertised not too far away from me so I went to have a look. The sellers description was inaccurate to say the least due to the lack of the aforementioned "four brand new tyres, service history and genuine mileage" not to mention the fact it was a year older than he claimed, but in its favour this jeep was incredibly solid for its age. The chassis and inner arches were perfect, the engine good apart from a little hesitancy at particular revs and even the sills were intact albeit with a couple of blisters in the original paint. The fact that the true mileage is a mystery didn't concern me too much as it started from cold with no difficulty and with nothing more than an initial blast of diesel smoke from the exhaust before clearing so I bought it. It has more than its fair share of battle scars to the bodywork and needs a few bits and pieces but those are problems for another day.

Right now however it is the condition of the LSD that is concerning me and given that I know very little about them other than what I have read both here and elsewhere I will post about that in the relevant section later.

I will be hoping to investigate further tomorrow armed with some new information but for now hello to all!

Best regards,

Michael

Hi and welcome.

Lots of info here, so you should be OK. Rot is the biggest killers of the Terrrano, but find a reasonable one, and give it a bit of TLC, and you should be fine.

Have fun.

welcome to the club. You chose the right Japanese 4x4.

get the LSD oil changed if you are unsure, but I will await your posts.:thumbs

Welcome to the group.

Chances are if it's blistering on the sills they will need doing in a year or so.

Welcome:D Terrano's are dreadful motors that's why i've bought a second one:lol:lol:lol they do have their faults like all motors but my last one cost very little in the 3 years I had it as thats the length of time I will keep a motor for but regreted selling it so will be keeping this one until it can't be welded any more:augie

3 years ... no staying power, I've had mine over 18 years:nenau

As long as we can get service parts we will continue to run it, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks everybody for the welcome! I do see something that has aroused my curiosity though. Whats a "mini filter"?

Best regards,

Michael

Look in the downloads,
If you have a mini filter it may be clogged causing all sorts of problems, with mine it was lack of revs, no power and misfires:eek:
If you have one it is where the fuel enters the IP.
Do a search for mini filter

On the early ones under banjo bolt on fuel pump is a mesh filter & on some of the later ones the filter is inside the banjo bolt

probably not have a mini filter on a '98, were generally only the mk1s upto 96 ie the td
not the tdi (intercooler).

I've had 1x reg terrano and a ip off a 2003 2.7 tdi and in both pumps had filter in banjo bolt think they all came out with the mini filter but over the years some people have taken them out so next owner thinks it never had 1:thumbs

If I take mine out to clean it can I leave it out. 2004 Terrano 2.7 lwb
