Right.......... newish member & asking very similar questions most of the time (see previous posts)..... 'sorry'!

Ok, got my T2 ('99 V) recently. Paid a reasonable amount for it, though not a huge fortune, as it seemed extremely sound.

So far it's been an absolute pig!

I expected a full on/major service, then all would be fine (factored into my costs).

So far, after purchase, front diff was k****ered. Was surprised as it worked perfectly on test drive & afterwards - quietly too! However close examination revealed it had no bl**dy oil in it (testament to the strenght of the things if they'll still work, without complaining, whilst dry!). Anyway new (ok, recycled) front diff on it now.

Temp gauge wasn't working. New sender put in (local motorfactors couldn't find one for the diesel so same from a petrol went in - my thoughts being that engine temp is engine temp - 82 or 88 degrees - or whatever, so they'd be the same. Sure I'm right on that), bloody gauge now goes through the roof within 1/2 a mile of driving.
I'm thinking thermostat (?) Bought one today & hopefully fit it in the next few days.
Sound right to you guys?

Also, if I drive it whilst the gauge is heading to the red, am I running the engine at a high temp, or is it just a missreading? Really don't want to f up the head gasket or cause myself additional problems.

Have also convinced myself that there's a slight weeping from the water pump.. might be wrong on this though. You know how it is when looking at things from a depressed situation!
I'd like to sort the above before looking any further at this!

Slight misting on the offside brake cylinder...... not even worried about that! I'll sort that once happy with the above!

Grrrr...... Why do cars always end up costing more, & causing bigger headaches than anticipated? I should have learned that by now.......

Thanks all!

On the plus side, I've taken it out in thick snow (I am in the Peak), on a couple of easy lanes, & played in a muddy field..... It's brilliant, even on road tyres.
Just want to get everything sorted so I know it's reliable....

Thanks! .... & what a great resource this is.

Hi Ian, you have had some bad luck haven't you. Normally with a standard 82 degree stat they tend to run on the cool side, I've stuck an 88 degree in mine and gauge goes a touch over half way and given the choice I may well of been better with the 82 degree but we'll see in summer. Which sensor did you fit the petrol version or diesel? I understand your thinking but if for some reason the petrol gives a different resistance for a given temp then you may well get it reading incorrect.
Oh yes the water pump does tend to go, you tend to get a few drips of coolant on the drive in the centre of the front.

Check out the downloads section as there are workshops on both these two subjects.

Jim

PS you're quite right about this place being a resource as it's saved me ton's and made some good friends over the years.

As Jim says, simple stuff. Well the diff was a pain and very unusual but you can't legislate for lazy owners can you.

Water pump is about £80 and once fitted will never trouble you again - do the belts at the same time and forget them too.

Temp gauge should be at 12 o'clock at running temperature.

And look at it this way; you'd have spent at least twice as much for a Land Rover of the same age, possibly more, and it would have had even more wrong with it!

If the water pump is on it's way out the temperature gauge will rise :(

If you don't trust the fitted gauge, buy a separate temp gauge which you can see what degrees the water temperature actually is, not just a pointer at some lines.

Saves a lot of worry my gauge used to go in the red when going up hills, now I know it not going to blow as it only hit 88c so still room to move and piece of mind.
