I am new here and looking at getting a patrol y61 in the next 6 months or so to replace my current tow vehicle. I have been pointed in the direction of a y61 patrol but just wondered a few things

what sort of truck could I get work a budget of 5k

What to look out for on it

what the mpgs are like on them. I want it as a family car but to be able to tow my offroad truck which I estimste the trailer to be around 3.2t loaded.

What are common issues

I have seen a few 2.8's and 3.0 for sale on ebay

regards

adam

Can't help on the patrol, but there are quiet a few on here that can, when they are on-line, so just wanted to say, Hi and Welcome.:thumb2

Hi and welcome, we have some patrol nutters on here so sit tight and they will be on :thumb2

Myself and lazy ferret are terrano guys so patrol advise is prob not our thing. They are beastly though, and I believe meant to be ace for towing (not so much on mpg's tho) :augie

I don't know much about the 2.8s and 3.0s but I recently saw a post on Facebook where I guy went from a Defender 90 to a 2.8 patrol and said the patrol towed so much better than the defender.

Not sure on the max towing weights of patrol either, might be worth looking into.

I currently tow with a td5 disco which is slugish on the hills etc. So looking to replace it with something more powerful / reliable.
what are patrols like for rot?
I see there is a 4.2 patrol also but think they will probably be out of my price range

Welcome bud from a Y61 owner :thumbs

Unless someone has done an engine swap in a Y61 or imported one from Aus then the only 4.2 Trols are going to be older Y60s. Rot wise no particular issues that I know of, obviously the younger vehicles are likely to be better and Trols certainly don't have a reputation for having a cheese chassis the way the Discos do but it's the same story as with any used 4x4s, check the chassis/wheel arches etc for rot traps.

Mine is a '54 and apart from the to be expected surface rust on bits of the chassis she's good. Only rot I have found when I've been messing about in the workshop is on the radiator crossmember and I only found that out when I removed the bumper to fit my winch mount. It'll need sorted at some point but is fine for the time being - I stuck some hammerite on it and carried on fitting the winch.

If you're going for a Y61 then based on your budget I think you should be looking at late 2.8s as most of the 3.0s in budget will be early ones and there were a lot of issues with the early 3.0s. Problems were pretty much fixed once they started fitting the 3.0 to the Terranos in 2003 so if you can find a late 03 or younger Y61 in good condition and in budget then go for it.

Power wise the 3.0 beats the 2.8 but neither are exactly speedy as they aint a light vehicle (lwb is around 3t fully loaded). Based on your towing requirements you'll need a manual to stay legal as they're rated to 3.5t whereas the auto's are only rated to 2.5t (but both will pull a lot more if need be).

Your budget will probably throw up a selection of lwb or swb so it depends on your needs as a family car. Lwb is huge :D even longer than a Disco 3 and tbh if you're towing near the rated capacity I would be tempted to stick with one of those for stability.

Personally I love my Trol and won't be getting rid of her. She's great offroad, been very reliable and very very comfortable. Just bear in mind parts aren't as easy to get a hold of or as cheap as they are for your Disco but they're by no means impossible and if you really need to you can get parts sent over from Aus (I've only done this once as I replaced and converted the flywheel from DMF to SMF and fitted a HD clutch).

It may not matter to you but for reference the 2.8 is a timing belt so it'll need to be changed at some point. The 3.0 is part timing gear/part timing chain and shouldn't ever need changed as the chain drives very little.

All Y61s are drive by wire throttles.

Both are DMF and, certainly with the 3.0 engine can actually put more power through the flywheel than it can cope with leading to early failure. You can either replace with another DMF or do a SMF conversion like I did. Neither option is particulary cheap but with the SMF it should be a LONG time before anyone needs to go in about there again, particularly if you fit an HD clutch.

Fun fact - The Y61 was sold in Aus with the option of a 4.2 diesel instead of the 2.8 or 3.0. When they produced the 3.0 Y61s they kept the same driveline (gearbox/transfer box/prop etc) but just fitted a DMF :doh instead of the 4.2s SMF. The strength of the driveline compared with the DMF is partly the reason for the DMF failure.

What it means is that if you move a couple engine mounts and fit a manual throttle pedal, you can just slot a 4.2 from a Y60 or Y61 straight into a 3.0 Y61...

Guess what I'm gonna do if and when I have the spare cash :naughty

Thanks for the replys what age did the 3.0 become more reliable. Would it be better to save a bit more and try and get a 3.0? Is there much difference in towing ability? Are winch bumpers available or would I need to fab something myself?
Thanks
Adam

Winch bumpers are available for the y61. They turn up on eBay now and then aswell so you could drop Ina bargain. Parts are more readily available than for for the y60 and generally cheaper too

Have seen one 4.2 Y61 on Auto Trader I think but verey rare.I've got a Y60 2.8TD and had a 4.2 diesel, both great towing cars,my 2.8 has pulled a few heavy/awkward things and am mightily impressed. The guys on here will give you good info, and by the way bienvenue from SW France

Thanks for the replys what age did the 3.0 become more reliable.

See my post above bud, late 2003 on so later the better :thumbs

You'll get a lot of scare stories on the net about the 3.0 cooking cylinders and it has suffered a bad rep due to Nissan stuffing up with the early ones. Most of the stories are from Aus where the Trols have been really popular and as usual you only really hear about the bad ones. What also doesn't help is that the Aussies seem to mod their engines more and the 3.0 can be a bit sensitive even for simple engine mods like fitting a larger exhaust. I don't think the hotter climate helps either or the fact Euro spec Y61s all seem to have egr coolers while the Aus spec don't. The Aussies didn't get the coolers until the engines went crd.

Far as I know tow rating is the same 2.8 or 3.0. Only difference is the 3.0 has more ponies under the bonnet. Have never driven a 2.8 but I believe the lwb at least can be a bit sluggish so 3.0 might suit you better? Take them for a drive and see but stay my advice is stay away from an early 3.0.

Like Spinna says you can get winch bumpers new pretty easy, ARB and Ironman spring to mind. Occasionally you'll get lucky like I was and one will pop up on eBay but not very often!

Yeh Clive seen the odd one myself, usually engine swaps, less often imports.

Nissan never sold the 4.2 Y61s over here :(

Thanks for the replies I will start looking and seeing what is out there. Im not in any hurry so can wait for the right one. may be better saving a bit more to get a 3.0 then. What is the 3.0 like on fuel?

Adam

Best I had before fitting the winch was 26 mpg on a run with some town, some light offroad at the farm and long motorway run.

Reckon I probably average around 25 mpg these days with the winch on and mixed driving.
