Hi Me again!

Forgot to ask, ive had the middle section & back box replaced on my 2003 2.7tdi because the whole thing had disintegrated!!

The replaced parts have seriously amplified the turbo whistle to more of a painful scream really!!

The turbo is certainly working well, but go from 1000-2500 rpm and it whistles, any more it enters a whole new dimension of volume!

The sound is coming out of the rear of the exhaust. Is there anything i can do to dampen the sound because i just cant justify a new turbo at the moment and cant find one for less than £300!! A friends father had one the same and he just accepted it. certainly more patient than me!! Its starting to drive me mad!!!

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated! :D

That's what mine was last month, starting off as quite a nice wee whistle that I liked but then the flexi bit went altogether and screamed at me all the up the revs. I've done away with the flexi altogether now.

unlikely to be a turbo problem more an exhaust issue, Rick

Mine has only got the centre box (nissan stamped centre & rear exhaust) & I can hear the turbo unlike my older model that had 3 boxes on the exhaust

With the engine running, get a cloth in a plastic bag,* and press lightly on the exhaust end, the more you press the harder the back pressure, OR you'll hear it leaking.

That should eliminate a leaking exhaust or guide you into looking further in to it.

* plastic bag to seal exhaust, cloth to save burning your hand and help to seal the end.:thumb2

Other than that, have you changed anything else?
Air filter? oil maybe?

Edit...
Just thinking...
With the tdi and all it's sensors, is it possible that the new exhaust has different characteristics, like less back pressure, and does the ECU have to compensate for this?
I know it seems unlikely, but maybe disconnecting the battery for a while and reconnecting it, then going for a run might help. Now this is not without it's problems, you will loose the radio code and maybe the NATS anti theft system might need resetting.

So wait for further advice and confirmation before taking this drastic step... like I say only a thought...

Hi guys thanks for your help. I've taken the car bk to the exhaust fitters, who removed the new exhaust that was fitted and whilst removed I put my foot down and it was still screaming! So it's defo engine( turbo) related. Even the fitters said it wasn't an un common Nissan fault! So it's Still annoying me!!

Strange one, never heard of that myself.

same sort of issue

on my old terrano all was fine turbo-ly speaking. have a newer terrano now, 2000 2.7tdi, and it screaches when foot is right down, and stops when you take it back off, sounds from the turbo, so i guess i need to do a rebuild., could be a bearing

Someone had this on here recently, their mid box had developed a hole, took it to Kwik Fit and they replaced it but when it was driven away the turbo was very very audible!!!

Took it back and complained, the replaced it for a different brand and that solved it!!!! But do check the front downpipe flexi first as the sudden change in back pressure might have weakened it!!

Well close...
That someone was me...:thumb2
It was the front pipe that was replaced, and it was this section that was causing the turbo noise, just at the time my boost gauge started to show turbo pressure.
Alternative exhaust piece sorted it.:thumb2
