HI, i just found these forums and signed up as it looked like one of the rare ones that actually have intelligent and helpfull members :)

anyway to the problem... i have recently bought an '02 plated maverick, it looks great is mechanicaly sound , bodywork is good.

im getting the check engine light coming on, at first it was p0402 , one code so i took it to a garage to get fixed, which in my opinion i was overcharged for,... and after travelling about 15 miles the light came on again.

i put my scanner on it and it now comes up with a code p0401 .
ive done a little research and it looks like the egr valve may need cleaning, ive found it in the engine, and as i am a complete NOOB at mechanics, was wondering if this is something i can tackle myself .

i have seen some you tube vids on it, and have downloaded instructions from the net.

also if this isnt the problem, any ideas on what else could cause it.

by the way the vehicle runs fine but it wont pass an M.O.T with the light on.

Welcome mate, your best bet for your problem will be Timbo 1975, and Rustic, I am not too well up on codes, Rick

02 maverick is not the same as the terrano II or eariler mavericks (up to 1999 i think). Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

But might be help here.

Hi is it a 2.7 or the 3.0 sve?

Sorry I should of read the whole post its a maverick so it will be a petrol.
If you have a manual for it and know which is the egr valve they usually crud up the hole where they bolt on if you get some carb cleaner and something to clear the crud out it should cure the problem as long as the egr valve is still operating.

yes its a 2.0L petrol.

got me some carb cleaner, preparing to do it in the morning..

prepare to see on the news

"and in other news today.. a brummie was seen running around on fire screaming i dunno what im doing..." lol

wish me luck :)

I have answered you on your other post it is the Lamba sensor in the exhaust but the problem is with these codes other problems can cause these readings if the EGR is linked to the Lamda reading through the ecu then it would also cause the lamda readings to be out.It could be just the case of the Lamda needs changing or it could be something else causing it I have had a bad connection on an injector cause this before.
Check the wiring at the Lamda/Oxygen sensor make sure it is not burnt on the exhaust.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

3. is partially right, what you have is the 2002 Ford Maverick which is in fact a Mazda Tribute. Not the earlier 1993- 1998 or 99 Ford Maverick which is based on the Nissan Terrano.

Luckily Ford insisted that Mazda put the Ford engine in, the 2.0 zetec I think, so in my opinion you need Ford help from either a Mondeo site, or focus for this part of your problem.

Hope this helps.

Can any other member confirm this please.:nenau

best regards, Rustic
