Well, here we go. I purchased this car to be a tow'er (truck/4x4/what do you call it!!) as I had planned to build a new prefab garage for messing about with cars. Needed it for general building works. My current garage is a wee bit tight. I wasn't thinking that this was going to be my first 4x4 project when I got it. Purchased for 1500quid, and had an MOT until October - so how bad can it be! Owned by the same owner since 2007. Admitted that the speedo was wrong, not 60k but 106k (seems honest) and also said that he had got the gearbox bearings done and redone the clutch at the same time.
So, started to have a good poke around tonight. Based on some of the advice provided, check certain areas (minus the boot). Here is what I found:
Driver side front wheel arch, all good - maybe a little bit of bubbling.
Passenger side front wheel arch, thank good looking good to!!
Now for the drivers side rear wheel arch. Not so good, but not bad. Maybe a rub down and filler will do just fine.
Finally, the passenger side rear wheel arch. Worst of the lot, but not as bad as Jims-Terrano!
Next, under the car. The guy did say that it had be waxed. so fingers crossed. One thing you can't do is to crawl until the car, without jacking it up! Tight, but I managed it.
I had already found the compression-rod bush mount/cup or whatever you call it. Had thought about giving that a go, as access wasn't to bad. This was on the drivers front side
Next, moved along and found a bit of pointy metal. Had to check the other side to see what it was for. An additional cross support for a body mount. Maybe just cut it off, no one would be any of the wiser!
Next, at the rear another body mount which doesn't look the best. Not sure how easy it will be to do this on your back. Maybe will get a garage to do it?
Although would probably have to fabricate the whole bracket from scratch.
Next, checked the other side. Stuffed my hand into the front bumper support and can feel that breaking up. Just the side section. Certainly something I could tackle (no pictures, haven't taken the bumper off yet).
And that's it. Have I been lucky or just blind. Checked the rear seatbeat mount and appears sound. Wheel arch has been waxed good and proper. Rust is starting to lift on the edge of one side but no where near the bolt.
Did these come out of the factory waxed? The guy that owned it claimed he got it wax and also rubbed old oil around it. Certainly going by the pictures he did do that! I just hope that it wasn't to hide something!
Wax on the sill.
Old oil on the underpan.
So the plan next is to consider my options around doing the welding. And have other things such as full service, including brakes, etc. The cabin needs a good cleaning too.
All in all, think thats a good project to start with. Not a disaster to start with.:clap:thumb2
