Maximum fines imposed by magistrates are set to rise dramatically under new proposals for England and Wales.

The highest maximum limits, for offences including motorway speeding, could increase from £2,500 to £10,000.

Other speeding, driving without insurance and selling alcohol to a child could also see increases.

Justice Minister Jeremy Wright said financial penalties "set at the right level" were an effective punishment for offenders. FULL STORY HERE

Yeah and they collected £240 million last year.Does it go to the upkeep of the roads, does it hell.Greedy B@%$@^*s ..

Definative proof then that it's a stealth tax and NOT a safety issue.
Bleed the motorist for all he's got = massive fines.
Re-educate drivers = massive points . That's what hurts, not being able to drive.
If they want safe then simply slap on 6 points for speeding and a ban for no insurance. BIG FAT BUT , allow all offenders the chance to retake their driving test from scratch to clear the points.
Simples

theres nothing stealth about it, this will get the poorer people off the roads that cant afford to pay while the rich fookers get to carry on

Don't speed, you won't get taxed.:thumbs

If everyone in the country didn't speed for a week, the speed scamera's would
be redundant, it'll never happen though.:augie

Not a lot of chance with the maverick, i think i would need to pull a fuel tanker behind my if i was doing 75 80 mph lol

Odd, my 95 2.7 td, can still reach 95 or even more, even 100, on a test track, and that is confirmed by the GPS

Trouble with the Mav and Terrano, is they are as aero dynamic as a brick:doh

Can't keep it up all day, as you are right, you would spend more time filling up than driving, but we are talking speeding, and these vehicles are more than capable of getting speeding tickets, even the older Td's like mine.

Here Here, totally agree. I sit as close to the speed limit as possible.
My mate got done last week, I had driven down a road and noticed the stealth copper in black, with his speed camera, I told my mate about it and about 30 mins later, I got a call to say he had been done at the same spot, 37 in a 30 zone.
I laughed and called him a prat, I had even warned him about it :doh:doh

If I need to make progress, if conditions allow, then I never exceed + 10% or as much as 80 mph on the motorway, and there are still loads passing me.
If no cars are passing me, then I am the next target. so I slow down, until approx 10% of cars are passing me. So far so good...:augie

In the Picasso on the motorway we can get 55 + mpg, as long as we don't exceed 70mph, and don't floor it going up long hills.

The problem is 30 mph zones, we have one that links two local villages a couple of miles part, the road looks like it should be unlimited, ie 60mph, no houses, no businesses, wide borders with trees etc, but it is officially still 30 mph. :nenau

There is a lay by, that the police like to park in, with their speed camera

This week they have the speed indicator board there, that indicates your speed, it flashes red if you exceed 30, so I think they are advising that soon they will be out with their cameras, visitors beware...

Moral of the story, don't speed and you won't get a ticket...

On a journey of an hour or so, there is very little difference in time saved, if you travel at 60 mph, 70 or even 80 mph 5-10 minutes max. It's the congestion that causes the delays.

Yes mine has also seen the magic ton mark :augie

On track of course.

Although 100 on the speedo is only 70 anyway :lol

I think you will find that any court can only fine you commensurate with your income/financial status, so what this new increase means is that some well healed plonker will now be fined an amount that will hurt, there is absolutely no point whatsoever imposing a £10,000 fine on a regular working man, Rick

I don't think that's the case Rick . While I agree with your logic the reality is different. The fine will still be made commensurate to the crime and only after the fine is given is the defendant's means considered:eek:
I still reckon that points are more of a deterrent than fines .

I feel for you guys I really do, you's get fined & given penalties for just bout everything atm, we still only have the normal fines up here atm

I argee that the moral is don't speed then u can't get done. I couldn't anyway in that surf of mine its just a big lumbering lump :thumb2

Magistrates court and County court have to take account of your circumstances, but if they do not ask you should offer your details, then they have to take them into consideration, Rick

I can only assume this is a deterrent, £10k is hugely excessive and as Rick says wont apply to everybody (it just cant) I suspect there is more to this than we know, lets see how the story progresses.

then you apply for time to pay, simples, Rick

I did & got told where to go:eek::doh luckily royal bank of parents helped me out by paying the fine & I paid them back in full. Not sure if I got caught speeding the other night TBH but he didn't chase after me & I poss slowed down in time:nenau hopefully he was after the modded hot hatches as it was cruise night:augie
