Well - the Patrol failed the Mot today. Rot underneath.

The problem areas are the rear members which extend either side of the fuel tank. Gotta say, they are really bad. The guy at the garage says he's not seen one so bad before - he reckons that the truck has been used to drag a boat in and out of the sea.

These bits had been disguised by the guy I bought the car from with underseal etc. I didn't do the "poke it with a screwdriver" test - cos I thought these were good trucks/I was too excited/it was p*ssing down. I could kick myself....

Thers's also some rot on the bit adjacent to the sills.

I've been given an estimate of 600 notes for the welding. He reckon it's easily a days work 'cos of the awkwardness of the area (fuel tank and line)

Here's the question. Is it worth getting it fixed up? It's in great condition otherwise - the engines great - timing belts done etc. What's a 99 Patrol Y61 worth.

Opinion please.

better the devil you know or keep an eye on that nice terrano thats just gone up for sale on here for £1k and keep troll as play truck is it a 6cyl 2.8? (timming belt says so) or a 4cyl 3.0 (cam chain)

for that money, fix it if its fine otherwise. Lot of money yes, and so long as welder gets everything, youll have a truck that is stronger underneath than when it was new!

I'd agree, properly welded then properly cleaned up and undersealed its as good as the rest of the car.:thumbs

Probably worth getting the thing blasted underneath while you're at it and underseal the whole thing so you can forget about it.

Thanks for the advice...

... don't think I've got any alternative but to get it done. Can't help thinking that this might be the start of a long relationship with the body shop.

it doesn't seem like you have a lot of choice, as it is, and with no MOT you would loose more than the cost of the repairs.

And when it's done you have a good truck again, if you have any misgivings you could always sell it before the next MOT is due :thumb2

if that how you feel, then get a mechanic to inspect it before startign any work, and base yoru decision on that. if he has a PROPER look, and finds rust furthur up the sills, under the floor/wheel arches/ inner wings, corssmembers etc, then id think otherwise, but if it looks ok, then great, you will end up with a better car, not a worse one :thumb2

Get the work done, Then you should be good for a few years.

It's a nice looking truck, You don't see many SWB patrols.

Both my sills and one arch were done on mine at the garage where I bought it, The vehicle cost quite a bit including the repair but atleast it's done.

Whats the mileage?

Nice lloking truck:) gotta be worth it?

where abouts are you? i see your listed as south. pm me if you want (address) i'll help if i can and i'm sure i can improve on the 600quid day's labour charge!!!!

i've just done a full nut and bolt rebuild on my Y60 including 4kg of mig wire on the chassis!!!! so yours shouldnt be too much bother (apart from access), as above, well worth spending a couple of days under it with a couple of gallons of waxoil :) it'll save £££'s in the future :)

If yr welding t rust that becomes an art!!
Divvent use underseal thats a 'desiese' deseise'... problem watin t happn.
Get some chassis black enammel from the loacal motor factors. it goes on nice with a brush and gives a rock ard finish that the 'Tin worm' can't get under..
