I need to get my terrano MOT'ed in the morning and i have read so many conflicting opinions on the net about possible LSD damage caused by the break test rollers.

The combination of not being able to find a definitive answer on the net and not being able to get on the forum to ask ,for oops Internet explorer can not find blah blah messages for the past four hours has drove me around the twist.

Do i let them put it on the rollers for the brake test or insist on a tapley test?
Please advise as if there is even the remotest chance of my car being damaged i will insist on them doing the test drive brake test.

Also, i use many free forums without any trouble at all yet this one i am lucky if i can get on 50% of the time.

Many Thanks,

you shouldn't have any problems really, check the posts, houfe2206, had his mot yesterday and he had no problems, :thumb2

independent rear wheel brake testing will not damage your diff, any more than you sticking one wheel in soft shit and giving it some welly, so do not worry, Rick

and what on earth is that when its at home?

I ask the question in the context of the Terranos brake balancing circuit...?

The tester that examined my vehicle was more concerned about it wrecking his very expensive brake tester!
So.. he road tested the brakes.

I always advise them the the rear diff is LSD, so they know what to expect, they then choose to find the best test.
Never had any issues with the brakes. :nenau

Letting them know, ensures that if there is a difference then the LSD could explain it...:nenau :nenau :nenau

independent rear (or front) wheel brake testing is just that, both wheels are on the rolling road and with just the (say) NS turning, the brakes are applied and the force is read on a meter, then the same is done on the other side, the readings have to be within limits or the brakes fail, if they were to rotate both rear wheels and brake, then extra precautions need to be taken as if the front brakes are bad or say on a wet painted floor then the car can shoot forward off the rollers, not good, in the case of a LSD both rear wheels will rotate but only one is being powered by the machine so the other is free, Rick

I've never had any issues at MOT time with a lot of vehicles with a rear LSD, to be honest I've never even thought about it or heard anyone question it before :nenau

i really don't think the rolling road speed (about walking pace) and the duration of he brake test (about 10 seconds per wheel)are anything to be concerned with, i was more concerned about him revving the shit out of her for the emmisions!:(

no way round that one, the MoT test criteria are quite specific.....

Hi, thanks for all your replies.

Took Terrence for its MOT on Saturday and told the tester that it had an LSD and i was concerned about the break roller test.

He said no problem, that they use the tapley meter on all 4x4s and that every thing else they turn the drive wheels and if they turn the same way they run the brake rollers the same way.

Anyway when it came to the brake test he road tested it with the tapley meter. And the Car passed with flying colours:D

I have tried to access this site several times since saturday morning and this is the first time i have managed it.
