I don't really know the difference between modifying a diesel and modifying a petrol. Are the principles the same?

If you want to go to the point of putting a larger turbo on what else do you need to consider in a diesel? Could I put a modern upgraded turbo on the 2.8 patrol and get it remapped, woild that suffice?

Also with regards to a boost controller, how would that work with a tunnit plug in box. I presume the tunnit will give it more boost and set the psi, so would a boost controller just mess things up?

Mods I'm thinking off are exhaust, egr blank, tunnit box and a boost controller.

Makeitfit is your man for this one, he even squirts Propane up the inlet, Rick

Well anything bigger usually requires more fuel, more fuel is generally pump controlled or remap on more modern engines. Not that familier with the 2.8 and dont know how its controlled but i would think a tunit box would sort it as its not that old, those 2.8's are really good engines when running right.

At what stage do internals need upgrading to cope with the extra power?
2.8 has an early computer controlled injection pump.

these engines are well over over specked, so stick what you want at them, Rick

I have a Steinbauer performance chip fitted on mine, previous owner initially had a Tunit chip professionally fitted but said they couldn't get it to work properly so it was removed in favour of the Steinbauer module. To be honest I can't tell much difference at low revs (below 2000rpm) it still seems slow, you have to give it a bootfull and rev it past this to get any performance from it. Web link below:.

Thanks again for your help.

Have you got a 2.8 patrol aswell as the terrano?

No sold the 3.0 Terrano to get the Y61 shorty. Just fancied something a bit different, but they are like chalk and cheese performance wise. I'm still trying to get used to the Y61 as the 3.0 had so much torque in comparison to the 2.8 and when fitted in the Terrano which is a much lighter truck it was like surfing on a wave of torque if you got the gear changes just right.

That looks really nice :thumbs

I do like the swb very much. I had a test drive in a y61 swb 3.0 and it was bloody quick, certainly compared to my 2.8 lwb. I wonder what the difference in weight the swb to the lwb is as I think that makes a big difference from what I've test driven

I'd need to check the sales brochure but I think it's a good 1/2 - 3/4 ton

Thats got to make a big difference then to performance.

Question now is which plugin chip is best, we seem to have three that people have suggested, Tunit, steinbauer or the chip tuning box on ebay that ships from Italy.
In terms of performance numbers all are pretty much exactly the same. Just wish we could put all three together to have a real life test to see how they alter drivability, where the torque curve is.

Power mods did someone say :sly
Been a busy week but now then here I am with lush info, settle down :)
LPG rocks :naughty
As said above tweaking the turbo can lead to under fueling and chip tuning can only go so far due to the ECU's minimal control on the pump.
Sooo, what you do is stuff LPG up it's slot. This acts as an accelerant causing nearly all the diesel charge to burn, thus giving you around 25% or more new power. Basically the unburnt fuel that used to go out the zorst now goes boom = oomph :thumbs
You can still run with a remap or power chip etc and any other mods you like, I do :freak3:

Nice, does sound a lot more efficient. How does that work in terms of setup though. Do you have to spec the truck exactly the same as a petrol with the same setup and engineers note for legality?
