for a while now ive been thinking about moving my rear number plate somewhere else because when offroading my towbar acts like a plough and crowds mud up into the numberplate, which has led to it bending.

anyway, i was just cruising ebay today when i noticed the most (if not all) imports aka mistrals have there number plate mounted on the back door: picture

i just wondered whether someone could tell me how the numberplate mounting is fixed to the back door eg bolted, screwed in, self adhesive.

any help is appreciated, tom

I once fixed a square number plate to a Suzuki Vitara back door by supergluing four strip magnets onto the back of the ally plate and then plonking said plate onto door. Never came off, even on roughest terrain.
Did same for plate lighting but ran cable behind spare wheel to hide it as much as poss.
Reason for all this was that the law was not happy about towball obscuring the original number plate.

Have a word with HB as he has fitted the Mistral number plate mounting onto his Mav

Standard tinnings include special clips and a couple of bolts IIRC, mine is bolted through with 4 stainless bolts and I patched into the tow bar tail lights wiring loom using a bit of the original number plate light loom to provide the nissan plug, though I did need to cut a bit off the plug to make it fit into the socket of the mistral number plate loom.

Don't know if later doors are the same but the mistral nos plate mount is shaped to fit the swage line (groove) in the back door - fits really nicely.

Take your tow bar off when offroading and relocate the electrics to up behind the bumper cable tied up out of the way, makes a huge difference to departure angle and general clearance, but if you do the first bit to hit is the number plate hence why I moved it.

Hi,

this is something i ve been toying with for some time. iirc the spare on a misty is mounted slightly more left than a mav/t2. but hb has managed and of course there are plenty of other rear spare fitted trucks with door mounted plates.

other thought was to create a mount on the spare wheel, in a similar style
to the new jeep cherokee, think latest shogun is integrated with cover too.

as for the towbar creating a plough, yes could remove but is useful for recovery. my plan though no nearer as need a good welder is to create a receiver on the main crossbar of bracket then can 'plug in' a high level ball/jaw/pintle or for normal towing work a deeper plug in drop plate. as pre 's' reg this would be legal. to be more flexible the drop plate could include a receiver to use same plug in towing gear.

my electrics are already on loose cables which i tuck up behind the bar and number plate, these i would retain or mount sockets on top side of bumper step.

feasible?? offers of fabrication??

The towbar boes make a half reasonable recovery point but the proper recover points that you uncover by removing the tow bar are better.

If putting the number plate on the rear wheel you'd have to run the electrics somewhere in such a way that you can still get the spare off, so around the wheel or through t with a plug/socket. The mistral holder solution is better only be warned technically the number plate size is illegal on a UK sourced car, fine on an import but not legal on a car first registered in the UK.
