Hi every one this is my first post !!
I picked up a 1994 2.7td Maverick

its an old girl so no expecting it to be perfect

It drove great, yesterday i took the original air filter out the screw it type and replaced it with a motor factor type which was 4" to long so i cut it down OOOPs .

the car would not rev over 3k before this but now it still wont rev over 3k but it is chucking out plooooooooms of white smoke and missing.
if i sit in neutral stationary and hold throttle to floor it literaly bellows out white / grey smoke .

are the original air filters more restrictive, am i drawing in too much air !
and today im going to replace the main filter and fill with redex, and im going to clean thew micro filter and maybe remove it.

Does this sound feasable or does it sound worse like blown turbo or head gasket.

thanks peoples

try cleaning the mini filter in the pump first job.

help is in the downloads section..

Hi and welcome to the forum.
White smoke is associated with either a new Pope, or air is getting into the fuel lines.:lol

Common source of air entry is...
The fuel filter, cheap ones don't always seal that well.
The fuel lines from the tank corrode and leak.
The pipes on top of the fuel tank corrode and leak, access via a panel under the rear carpet, remove rear door floor trim, lift carpet, you will see a round plate.

Fuel is pulled from the tank by the injector pump, as there is not a pump in the tank, so it is easy to draw air in.

To eliminate this problem, disconnect the fuel line after the filter and have a high diesel feed and use gravity. Clearly only suitable whilst static:eek:

hope it helps,

best regards,
Rustic

So far i have not done anything to the vehicle except change the air filter,
as i quoted the new one is no longer a sealed filter as i cut 4" off it as it was too long, just wondered if its allowing to much air to be drawn in, or if its just increased the symptoms of an already blocked micro or main filter.
I have a new main filter will replace tonight, and i will remove the mini filter tonight also will return the original air filter back .
But before all this i only got the car few days ago and it would stumble around 2.5 k and not rev over 3k but thoght it was just old lol.

the struggling is symptomatic of a blocked mini filter on a none I/C 2.7 TD engine. Check that first, then the fuel filter (ensure is tight and primed) and yes, incorrect air filter will not help.

thanks guys, im working at the mo :-( so will remove it when i get home, thanks ,hope it sorts it !!

My Terrano is also a 1994, and I have had the same problem as you. Definitely was the mini-filter, it seemed to need cleaning every few months (crappy Spanish fuel), so the last time I started to get the symptoms again, about 18 months ago, I took it out (and the spring) and never replaced it - no problems since.

So save me stripping it all out as per instructions !, i can see the banjo bolt connected to the fuel line, can i just stick me socket in there and unscrew and remove it with out taking the pump etc out.

I believe so yes, the downloads section has a good guide - you will need a long magnetic tool or hook to fish out the filter and spring - be slow and careful.

Thats what I did. But my filter was inside the bolt threads. Some have it buried down the rabbit hole.

mine coughed and missed and I found it was the leak off pipes leaking just a little on the injectors . changed them it has sorted it

:doh I had those problems when I bought the Mav 2.5 years ago, dealer fixed it under warrenty.:thumbs
It was missing and low on revs again so I thought it was mini filter again, WRONG.
The hardest part of getting to the mini filter was getting the pivot bolt out of the pump, it had been there I guess since 94 and had a build up of rust & crud. Dealer mechs cleared the filter without disturbing the pump, but hey they do it for a living.
Anyway mini filter was pretty clear about 1/4 full of crap, like sludge. What damage would that do to the injector pump if the mini filter was not there?
Last time the mechs told me it was like belly button fluff, not this time

Fuel filter will be changed Monday, it was only done a few thousand miles ago, perhaps the cooking oil I used last year softened the crap in the tank, we shall see.
dave:confused:

Mine was down inside the "rabbit hole!" The spring is stainless steel so a magnet won't work - I used a piece of wire bent to form a rough hook (the spring is around 10mm in diameter, as a guide to the size of hook needed).
The filter itself is stainless and brass, so again a magnet won't work, I used a long Philips screwdriver with a blob of grease on the end for the filter to stick to. worked a treat.
It is possible to do the deed without removing the p/s pump, I removed it the first time as per the download, but all subsequent times didn't bother, you just need steady hands to avoid bumping the filter against anything whilst lifting it out, if you drop it you can guarantee you will never find it again, that happened to me!

I suggest long thin nosed pliers to get a good grip on the spring and the filter

So i get the hesitating and lack of power from a clogged / blocked filter but what explains the plooms of smoke !!

I've always assumed it was a fuel/air imbalance caused by the blocked filter (no doubt someone more knowledgeable than me will be along to give you a definitive answer), mine did it until I took the filter out and didn't replace it.

Certainly lack of fuel, which can either be a blocked mini filter as seems more likely, or air getting in, which reduces the fuel as well, as per my earlier post.

Now if over fuelled you get black smoke, so under fuelled, seems logical to get grey to white smoke.

Certainly you are in the right area :thumb2:thumb2

Let us know if it cures it.

Best regards,

Rustic

hmmm but the only scary thing about white smoke is steam etc, where a head gasket is involved, definately let you all know tonight , thanks again :)
