Security is important which is why I want a removeable mount and no permanent hardware in the car !http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=350102890922

If you look in my pics above you can see the old screen less laptop that is running the touchscreen in the cargo net I'v attached to the front of the glove box. Ultimately it is going in the space behind the glovebox but whilst I sort out any niggles its fine where it is. For a temporary fit a similar affair on the front of te glovebox - or even in it with some of the smaller laptops ought to suffice with suitable padding.

The security point is spot on but dont forget that our criminal fraternity are most likely to go for what they know , understand and can see.

A top spec tom tom mount they will smell at 500m , a universal type mount quite interesting but " a bit of metal and a wire hanging down" duh whats that ?

They almost always nick to sell so whilst I'm not saying its a bad idea to hide things away they will always go for something useful, to be useful its got to be identified, hence the obvious dont leave laptops and sat navs in sight.

They are also likely to break into a car for a nosey in closed compartments if pushed especially if there's any give away sucker marks on the window or a Krussel type plate fastened somwhere.

The point there is that if the mount is hidden somewhere in the car its likely the kit attached to it is too.

If they want it or even want to look for it on a whim your car will get screwed anyway. Theres very few cars dont contain nickable items. There was a lot of research put into those ads telling you to remove everything from your car to be safest.

Its a cruel world but dont let paranoia spoil it, just avoid being an obvious or easy target :thumbs

Knew I had a photo of it somewhere! this is my toshiba. the visible screen is 11'' , the footprint or bas size is about 2/3 of a standard laptop and it weighs bot all. Its got a 750mhz PII and only 384mb of memory. However what it does do, because nothing else is running on it, is run mem map v5 and link through the built in blue tooth to a holux gps receiver. The best bit is these are now available for £50 and below.

Some of these little ones are coming with solid state drives though of as little as 2 or 4 Gb -I've just checked the on mine in the car and i have 17.8Gb of maps loaded.

Yeah , they are just for surfing the net , I'd be looking at something 60GB or more .
One thing I am considering since this discussion started is the option of using IBM thinkpad on the back seat linked to a flatscreen in the front ?
This would save me having to buy a notebook as we already have the IBM .
I'm assuming it would run a small lcd screen ok and this should be easy to mount ?

Running any kind of display is a small load on a processor/graphics card, so long as you aint trying to run a 48'' flat screen of a 100mhz 1996 w95 machine , which of course this isnt....go for it :thumbs

Just for info on the notebook shown I ran a 17'' monitor @ 16bit colour 1024x768 absolutely no problems on shared graphics.

TBH these are out of my direct knowledge and ecperience but looking at them the in dash looks good and from the published spec would connect. If it says win 2000 it should be able to hack lower spec easily such as your old IBM.

Theyre very similar to those we have had at work and the principal was convenient and effective.

My dosh would go on the in dash if you have it. Its as neat as.

:thumbs

I'm confident there'll be someone on here can advise specifically.
